The San Francisco 49ers made a noteworthy decision ahead of their Thursday Night Football matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, signing Adrian Martinez to the active roster instead of using a standard practice squad elevation on the quarterback for the third and final time. Martinez will serve as the backup to Mac Jones, who gets the start in Week 5.
Starter Brock Purdy has been ruled out against the Rams, marking his third missed game of the season. Purdy suited up against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, but experienced soreness in his injured toe afterward and was unable to practice this week.
The decision to officially sign Martinez rather than elevate him has raised questions about the severity of Purdy's injury. Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer suggested the move could indicate that Purdy's absence may last beyond this week's NFC West showdown at SoFi Stadium. If the team expected him back in Week 6, they likely would have used the final elevation instead.
Breer notes that Purdy's timetable for a return is uncertain, adding, "He's week-to-week, and it's Mac's show for now."
49ers QB Brock Purdy's timetable for return's uncertain. Aggravated it in-game, kept playing thru Sunday, severity of the turf toe is similar to Week 1—so this being a short week (vs. playing Sunday) didn't make a difference.

Unfortunately for San Francisco, Purdy isn't the only key player sidelined. Wide receivers Ricky Pearsall (knee) and Jauan Jennings (ankle, rib) were both ruled out. The team has been without tight end George Kittle since he suffered a hamstring injury in Week 1, while defensive end Nick Bosa suffered a season-ending ACL tear in Week 3.
Of course, the most logical conclusion is that the decision to sign Martinez may have been made simply to preserve the 49ers' practice squad elevations for other areas of need. The team elevated defensive lineman Trevis Gipson and wide receiver Malik Turner for the matchup against the Rams.
When asked if he rushed back too quickly from his initial toe injury, Purdy defended his decision.
"I was ready to go," Purdy said. "I felt pretty good, and for me to go out and execute on offense and go through reads and throw the ball throughout the week at practice, I felt great. And so, I had a lot of confidence going into the game, thinking that it was going to be good."
Despite the heavy wave of injuries this season, the 49ers still have an opportunity to claim sole possession of first place in the NFC West. To get there, they'll need to pull off an upset on the road against the Los Angeles Rams, who enter the Thursday Night Football matchup as 8.5-point favorites.
