NFL teams must trim their rosters to 53 players by Tuesday, August 26, at 1:00 p.m. PT. That will create a wave of talent on the waiver wire and among free agents—an opportunity the San Francisco 49ers could leverage to strengthen multiple position groups heading into Week 1.
While fans may hope for a new kicker to replace inconsistent Jake Moody, Bleacher Report's Moe Moton identified three other areas that could see an immediate benefit: wide receiver, guard, and defensive line.
The 49ers recently added help on special teams with the acquisition of wide receiver Skyy Moore, who is expected to contribute primarily as a returner rather than a significant offensive weapon. The team also bolstered its running back room by trading for Brian Robinson Jr., giving Christian McCaffrey a reliable backup and easing his workload.
Moton points out that the receiving corps could still use depth, especially with Brandon Aiyuk expected to miss time while recovering from ACL and MCL injuries.
"Jacob Cowing, Jordan Watkins and Russell Gage Jr. suffered injuries in the offseason. Jauan Jennings wants a new contract," Moton added.
Adding to the challenge, veteran Demarcus Robinson is set to miss the first three games due to a league suspension, though the 49ers are appealing the ruling.
Rookie Connor Colby could start at right guard after second-year standout Dominick Puni suffered a preseason knee injury. His availability for Week 1 is still uncertain.
"A veteran guard could help solidify the offensive line until the second-year pro returns to action," Moton noted.
On the defensive line, the writer notes that The Athletic's Vic Tafur expects Yetur Gross-Matos and Kevin Givens to be placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list and the injured reserve (IR) list, respectively. Gross-Matos continues to recover from a knee injury, while Givens is expected to miss the start of the season with a pectoral injury.
"If that is the case, San Francisco can restock depth along the defensive line with at least one free-agent cut," Moton wrote.
With roster cutdowns approaching, the 49ers have an opportunity to address key needs and reinforce depth across multiple position groups ahead of Week 1.
