San Francisco 49ers fans aren't the only ones concerned about the contract standoff involving wide receiver Jauan Jennings. Quarterback Brock Purdy is also paying close attention.
Jennings is entering the final year of the two-year deal he signed in 2024. According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the veteran wideout plans to request a trade if he and the 49ers can't agree on a new contract.
Purdy spoke to reporters on Tuesday as the team reported for training camp. General manager John Lynch confirmed that Jennings arrived on Monday and completed his physical. He added that the team expects him on the field on Wednesday for the first full practice.
For Purdy, Jennings' presence is vital.
"It's extremely important (to get the situation resolved)," Purdy said. "Obviously, love JJ, and what he brings to our team, and to myself, as a quarterback. Obviously, we've had so much success together, and anytime you see something like this going on, as a player, it's like, 'Man, let's figure out something so we can get back out on the field and we can continue to do what we've done.'
"So, obviously, I hope everything gets handled and everything, but would love my guy to be out there on the field with me."
Purdy reflected on an early moment in his NFL career when Jennings proved himself as a reliable and gritty offensive weapon.
"I think in Seattle—I can't remember if it was my rookie year or second year—I threw him like an out-route at four yards," Purdy said. "It was like 3rd-and-7, and he broke like three guys off him, and then got the first down. I was like, 'Okay, Jauan's a guy that's gonna fight until the very last whistle or breath that he has. He's a gamer.
"And obviously, he's done that just game after game. He fights his butt off. He blocks his butt off for everybody. It's not just about Jauan. He's doing it for everyone on the field and for his team."
Purdy ended his comments with more high praise for Jennings.
"Absolutely love playing with him and his mindset every game," he said. "Obviously, I have nothing but respect for Jauan and that's my guy."
