49ers sign Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265M contract extension

The San Francisco 49ers have signed quarterback Brock Purdy to a five-year, $265 million contract extension, bringing one of the offseason's biggest storylines to a close. According to NFL insider Tom Pelissero, the deal includes $181 million in total guarantees, including $165.05 million in the first three new years of the contract, which runs through 2030.

Purdy's new $53 million annual salary ties him with Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff as the seventh-highest-paid player in the NFL, while his $181 million in total guarantees ranks eighth overall.

The 49ers moved on from several high-priced contributors this offseason, clearing future cash commitments to prepare for this contract extension. They're also counting on their 11 draft picks to make meaningful contributions in the coming years.

Purdy entered the NFL as the final pick of the 2022 draft, earning the infamous title of "Mr. Irrelevant." Yet, he wasted no time proving the label wrong, exceeding expectations, and making an immediate impact as a rookie.

Thrust into the starting quarterback role after injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo, Purdy led the 49ers to the playoffs and an NFC Championship Game appearance before suffering a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.

Following offseason surgery, Purdy delivered an exceptional 2023 campaign, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards while adding 31 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He guided the 49ers to the Super Bowl, where they narrowly fell short in overtime to the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers suffered through an injury-marred 2024 campaign. Still, Purdy managed to throw for 3,864 yards in 15 games, tossing 20 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions.

While it wasn't the standout season he had enjoyed the previous year, the 49ers maintained unwavering confidence in him as their leader and quarterback of the future.

"Listen, I think what we know about Brock is that he's our guy," general manager John Lynch said in January. "We have interest in Brock being around here for a long, long time. He's done so much for our organization. He's won big games, and had a little tougher task, as we all did, this year with some of the things that happened throughout the course of the year. We just never could string games where we were all together. And through that, he continued to lead, he continued to play at a high level. So, we have every interest in him being around."

On April 1, owner Jed York revealed that the 49ers decided to make Purdy the highest-paid player in franchise history midway through last season. "I have every hope and every expectation that Brock is going to be a Forty-Niner for a long, long time," he added.

Purdy is preparing to enter his fourth NFL season, determined to help the 49ers rebound from a disappointing year and reclaim their status as contenders. However, he may have significantly less talent around him in 2025, as several key contributors—including Deebo Samuel, Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, and Jordan Mason—have departed for other organizations. However, the team managed to restock the roster using 11 draft picks last month.

Still, there is confidence in Santa Clara that the 49ers can return to their winning ways with Purdy at the helm.

"Brock is the leader of our team," head coach Kyle Shanahan said in January. "I've loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I'm here. Brock's been a stud. He's a guy I've got a lot of confidence in, just as a human. But it starts with what he's done on the field these last two and a half years.

"And we're capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he's capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future."
