Pro Football Focus analyst Mason Cameron recently published his list of free agency winners and losers, and the San Francisco 49ers didn't fare well. Cameron listed head coach Kyle Shanahan's squad among the losers, alongside the Green Bay Packers, Houston Texans, and New Orleans Saints.
Like many others, Cameron largely blames the impending contract extension for quarterback Brock Purdy as the reason for the roster purge, which has seen several fan favorites depart this offseason.
"With a lucrative extension for quarterback Brock Purdy on the horizon, the 49ers largely had to sit out free agency, watching from the sidelines," Cameron wrote. "As of this writing, their biggest signing has been tight end Luke Farrell, who agreed to a three-year deal worth up to $20.25 million."
That may still be their most significant addition. However, the team also announced the signings of wide receiver Demarcus Robinson, cornerback Tre Brown, linebacker Luke Gifford, safety Richie Grant, safety Jason Pinnock, and long snapper Jon Weeks—none of whom match the star power of some of those who are now gone.
The 49ers are also reportedly bringing in quarterback Mac Jones to back up Purdy in 2025.
Cameron notes that some of the team's key departures were necessary to "put itself in a position to extend Purdy." These include trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders and releasing defensive linemen Javon Hargrave, Maliek Collins, and Leonard Floyd. Longtime fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also shown the door.
"After a disappointing 2024 season, convincing the locker room that Purdy's contract is worth sacrificing roster depth and addressing key needs could be a tough sell," Cameron concluded.
