In the deal, the 49ers traded Samuel to the Commanders in exchange for a fifth-round pick in next month's draft. San Francisco now has 11 picks, starting with the 11th overall selection.
San Francisco selected Samuel out of South Carolina with a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. Now 29 years old, the wide receiver is gearing up for his seventh season in the league.
The 49ers Communications staff provided the following rundown of Samuel's career with the team.
Samuel Sr. (6-0, 215) appeared in 81 games (73 starts) in six seasons with the team (2019-24), where he registered 334 receptions for 4,792 yards and 22 touchdowns through the air to go along with 202 carries for 1,143 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground. He also started in 12 postseason contests with the team and registered 46 receptions for 638 yards and two touchdowns through the air to go along with 52 carries for 288 yards and one touchdown on the ground.
Through his first five NFL seasons (2019-23), Samuel Sr. accumulated 4,122 receiving yards and 1,007 rushing yards, making him one of two players in NFL history to record 4,000-or-more receiving yards and 1,000-or-more rushing yards in their first five seasons (WR Charley Taylor). He is also the only WR in NFL history to register 20-or-more receiving touchdowns and 20-or-more rushing touchdowns in a career. In the 2021 season, Samuel Sr. earned Associated Press First-Team All Pro honors and the first Pro Bowl selection of his career after registering career highs in receiving yards (1,405), rushing yards (365) and rushing touchdowns (eight).
