The San Francisco 49ers have long searched for a reliable pass rusher to complement Nick Bosa—Joey's younger brother. The two have often expressed a desire to play together in the NFL. As Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group noted, the Bosa brothers last teamed up at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Fort Lauderdale, where they won a state championship.
After 9 seasons with Chargers, Joey Bosa is a free agent … and capable of joining his brother Nick on the 49ers. They were last teammates at St. Thomas Aquinas HS in Fort Lauderdale and won a state title together https://t.co/QorIlRaY7i

Michael Silver of The Athletic shared that the 49ers had some level of interest in Joey Bosa last year, though nothing materialized. Now that he's a free agent, Silver questions whether San Francisco might pursue him this time.
I know a team with a Bosa.... 49ers had interest last year (when there was a chance the Chargers might release Joey Bosa); not sure that's the case this time https://t.co/xzWFyDS8Up

Bosa, 29, last posted double-digit sacks in 2021 but has struggled with injuries in recent seasons, limiting his playing time. In 2024, he appeared in 14 games, recording 22 tackles (five for a loss), 13 quarterback hits, five sacks, and two forced fumbles. Over his nine-year career, Bosa has amassed 72 sacks.
Even the rest of the Bosa family has entertained the idea of a reunion. Their mother, Cheryl, has publicly campaigned for her sons to play together. When asked last June about the possibility of teaming up with Nick, Joey kept it simple, replying, "It'd be cool at some point."
Would the 49ers make that dream a reality?
When Nick was asked last July about the possibility of playing with Joey, he responded, "It was fun to think about, but I think he wanted to stick with the team and be a part of hopefully their turning it around."
Should the 49ers pursue recently released Joey Bosa?
