Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio joined Radio Row in New Orleans ahead of Super Bowl LIX. While there, the outspoken NFL analyst shared his thoughts on the contract situation between the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy.
Purdy became eligible for a contract extension as soon as the 2024 regular season ended. For years, the 49ers have benefited from having their starting quarterback occupy only a small percentage of the salary cap. However, many expect Purdy to become one of the NFL's highest-paid players this offseason after spending three seasons on a bargain rookie contract as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Florio believes the 49ers should take a more cautious approach rather than committing a significant chunk of their salary cap to Purdy.
"Well, I wouldn't sign him this year," Florio said when asked how negotiations might play out. "I'd make him play another year. I think it's undetermined. I would make him an offer based upon what we've seen so far."
So far, Purdy has led the 49ers to two NFC Championship Games and a Super Bowl appearance in his first two seasons. He also set a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards in 2023. However, an injury-plagued 2024 campaign led to decreased production, raising questions about whether Purdy deserves a top-tier contract.
"I don't know what the magic number will be," Florio added. "The market's currently 60 million [dollars] a year. Would I offer him 35 to 40 million [dollars]? Maybe."

Florio made it clear that he would prefer the 49ers let Purdy play out his current contract before committing big money, giving the team another year to evaluate the 25-year-old quarterback.
Purdy played in 15 games last season, throwing for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while posting a 96.1 passer rating—all dips compared to his record-setting 2023 season.
The 49ers finished the season 6-11, landing in last place in the NFC West and missing the playoffs for the first time since 2020.
