Jake Moody will remain the San Francisco 49ers' kicker when the team heads to State Farm Stadium on Sunday to face the Arizona Cardinals. Moody's struggles continued during Monday night's six-point loss to the Detroit Lions, where he missed two field goals and an extra point, raising questions about his future with the team.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the situation during a Tuesday morning conference call with reporters. When asked if the 49ers might consider bringing in competition for Moody in the season finale, Shanahan was firm in his response.
"No, he's going to kick this final game," Shanahan stated.
The coach shared that he spoke with Moody after the game, pointing out that the missed extra point was the only one of the three misses where the snap and hold weren't clean.
"Still needs to make it, but that was the one that wasn't a clean holding and snap, which made that one a lot tougher," Shanahan explained.
Moody has missed nine field goal attempts this season, eight of them since returning from a high-ankle sprain. The 49ers selected Moody in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, a decision that has faced scrutiny amid his inconsistent performance.
When asked after Monday's game if the kicker position will be evaluated during the offseason, Shanahan responded, "We already are. We're evaluating all positions."
