The San Francisco 49ers entered the 2024 season with Super Bowl aspirations but have faced a disappointing campaign, now teetering on the brink of playoff elimination. The challenges have placed quarterback Brock Purdy under some scrutiny by his critics, raising questions about whether he deserves a lucrative extension as one of the NFL's highest-paid players despite his inability to carry the team through its injury-plagued season.
Purdy has thrown for 2,707 yards, 13 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, completing 65.7 percent of his passes heading into the Week 14 matchup against the Chicago Bears. However, his return from a shoulder injury last week was lackluster. In frigid weather, Purdy managed only 94 passing yards in a poor showing against the Buffalo Bills.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday that the 49ers remain committed to securing Purdy's long-term future, viewing him as the team's franchise quarterback despite his struggles.
"The season has obviously not gone as they hoped and expected, leading to some questions, I guess, about whether or not Brock Purdy is still the guy," Rapoport said Sunday morning on NFL Network's NFL GameDay. "From what I am told, he is, in fact, still the guy. The 49ers still plan on locking Brock Purdy up on a long-term extension this coming offseason."

Such an extension would significantly impact the 49ers' roster construction moving forward. Purdy's rookie contract has afforded the team financial flexibility, enabling them to spend heavily on surrounding talent. A higher quarterback salary could force tough decisions on some of the team's veteran stars.
In recent years, the 49ers have handed out several significant contracts. This year alone, they extended or restructured deals for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, tackle Trent Williams, running back Christian McCaffrey, and wide receiver Jauan Jennings. While Jennings has remained active, the others have either seen their seasons cut short or struggled to return from injuries.
In previous years, the 49ers have handed out hefty deals to defensive end Nick Bosa and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. However, some have argued that neither player has fully lived up to the expectations that come with their increased salaries.
The 49ers' continued faith in Purdy reflects their belief in his potential to lead the team, even as they navigate the challenges of a disappointing season.
