The San Francisco 49ers released their list of seven inactive players for Sunday night's game against the Buffalo Bills, including a notable name: Brandon Allen. Allen, typically Brock Purdy's primary backup, started last week's game against the Green Bay Packers in Purdy's absence but will be inactive at Highmark Stadium.
Instead, Josh Dobbs, inactive for 10 games this season, will serve as Purdy's backup against Buffalo. The decision comes as Purdy returns from a shoulder injury that sidelined him in Week 12.
While this might not seem significant on the surface, it carries some intrigue given Purdy's recent injury.
Allen's performance last week may have factored into the decision. In his first NFL start since 2021 and first start with the 49ers, Allen completed just 58.6 percent of his passes for 199 yards, throwing one touchdown and one interception. He also fumbled twice, losing one to the Packers.
Eric Branch of the San Francisco Chronicle speculated that Dobbs' activation over Allen might have more to do with the cold weather in Orchard Park, which could make passing conditions more challenging. Dobbs brings added versatility to the 49ers' offense, with the ability to make plays with his legs and arm.
The decision to make dual-threat QB Josh Dobbs the backup to Brock Purdy might be a nod to weather conditions which could make passing difficult. #49ers
