Falling to 3-4 on the season after another disappointing loss to the Kansas City Chiefs wasn't the only setback for the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday's 28-18 defeat. The team may now be without its highest-paid receiver for the rest of the season.
The 49ers fear Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL late in the first half.
"That's what it looks like (a torn ACL), but we don't know for sure," head coach Kyle Shanahan said in his post-game press conference. "Just doing the test and everything with our hands, and with the trainers and stuff, all that. That's what we fear, that's what it looks like, but we've been wrong before, so we're praying that we are."
Although Aiyuk hasn't made a significant impact this season after signing a massive contract extension just before Week 1, losing one of the offense's key playmakers prompted a reporter to ask Shanahan if the 49ers might look to the trade market for another receiver.
"I don't know," Shanahan responded candidly. "Depends what's available, depends on the risk and reward with everything. We look into everything and every situation but have to balance all that out."
When asked if he expected the 49ers to be active before the trade deadline, defensive end Nick Bosa, fresh off the frustrating defeat, bluntly replied, "Not my job."
NFL teams have until November 5 to finalize trades, and the 49ers always look for ways to upgrade their roster. Time will tell if they pursue a move at wide receiver or any other position in the coming weeks.
