It's a situation that everyone wants to see resolved quickly. The good news for San Francisco 49ers fans is that the team has reportedly restarted contract extension negotiations with frustrated wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, as first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz.
Aiyuk and his agent recently met with head coach Kyle Shanahan and other key figures within the organization. The meeting allowed both sides to share "some open and candid thoughts," leading to the resumption of negotiations.
On Friday, Aiyuk responded to the latest reports, posting on Instagram: "Brad (Graham of TheSFNiners), Niners be in the media everyday lol, it's two options out there pick one and stop dropping reports simple."
Aiyuk's options are clear. He can continue working with the 49ers on a mutually beneficial contract, play on the fifth-year option that will pay him $14.124 million, hold out, or accept a contract from another team willing to offer San Francisco sufficient draft compensation.
The 49ers hadn't budged from their last offer, which reportedly would pay Aiyuk an average of $26 million annually. This latest development indicates that the team still hopes to hold onto Aiyuk, which has been Plan A since the beginning of this process.
Aiyuk, the 49ers, and their fans continue to await a resolution to one of the offseason's biggest storylines.
