The San Francisco 49ers have earned several compensatory picks from the NFL due to various minority hires from their staff across the league, including names like Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans, and Ran Carthon. Saleh and Ryans served as defensive coordinators with the team before earning head coaching jobs with the New York Jets and Houston Texans, while Carthon now holds the general manager role for the Tennessee Titans.
According to ESPN's Seth Wickersham, NFL owners aren't too happy with the number of compensatory picks awarded to the 49ers through the league's minority-hiring initiative for coaches and executives.
The following excerpt is from a recent ESPN feature on 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
Shanahan is 44 years old now, with salt in his beard. By now, he's a fixed asset. We know that he can draw up a jazzy offense, regardless of personnel. We know he can hire well and diverse; in fact, owners have complained to the league office about the sheer number of compensatory picks the 49ers have received for serving as a pipeline for coaches and executives of color.
The 49ers are projected to receive four compensatory picks in the upcoming draft, the maximum allowable for a single team in one year. However, all four are attributed to player losses. San Francisco relinquished the compensatory pick it was due for the departures of Ryans and Carthon in exchange for defensive end Chase Young.
While the 49ers are committed to cultivating a talented and diverse coaching and executive staff, it appears that owners across the league are less than pleased with how often the team is rewarded for its efforts.
With the San Francisco 49ers fighting to avoid playoff elimination in the final stretch of the regular season, it's also time to start considering mock drafts and the players experts believe could help the team bounce back from another potentially disappointing campaign.
