Why Kyle Shanahan believes 49ers-Ravens was a great lesson for Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy had the worst game of his career, ending any discussions about the San Francisco 49ers quarterback's place in the MVP race. Purdy's performance on Monday night against the Baltimore Ravens contributed to the 33-19 defeat and was marred by a career-high four interceptions.

A game like that can be daunting for a young quarterback. Purdy is only in his second NFL season and made his first start just over a year ago. Despite this setback, the quarterback has demonstrated the poise and leadership of a seasoned veteran, instilling confidence within the team that he will have no issues rebounding from the poor outing.

"He's just got to move forward and treat it as a game," head coach Kyle Shanahan said of Purdy. "We reviewed the game. He does it on his own before I see him. I got some time to watch it with him yesterday. I know it's always tough when you have four picks, no touchdowns, especially when you have four of them by two minutes into the third quarter. But you also look into all of them. You talk to him about why they happened, what happened, and when you look in that game, it's not a hard thing for him to bounce back from and get to work this week."

On Tuesday morning, Shanahan broke down each of Purdy's four interceptions from the game. While acknowledging that the first one was a mistake on Purdy's part, Shanahan attributed the others to unfortunate outcomes resulting from some good defensive plays by the Ravens.

Purdy, who just turned 24 years old, has experienced a lot of early success in the NFL. Shanahan sees the humbling defeat as an opportunity for Purdy to learn and grow.

"I thought the biggest thing for Brock was the way it went in the first half," Shanahan explained. "I thought, just between Brock and I just talking, where I thought he struggled the most was after the four picks. I thought his first pick was a bad mistake. I thought the next three were unfortunate ones that you don't make excuses for.

"There's just tough football plays, and they made some good football plays. But it's tough to play a lot of football after you have four picks and stuff, especially when you're down versus that type of defense.

"And I think that was the best experience for him—how to feel that, to know what's happened, to know why it's happened, and still have to go out there and sling it around and play. And I think that's the best experience you can get from that game."
