Trent Williams on status for 49ers vs. Jaguars: “It’s up in the air”

The San Francisco 49ers have designated tackle Trent Williams as "questionable" for Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Head coach Kyle Shanahan says the offensive lineman is "real questionable."

Shanahan addressed reporters on Friday, stating, "We've got tomorrow. Tomorrow's Saturday. If it's no tomorrow, then we'll wait to game time. ... Today was half speed, wasn't able to do a lot yesterday, and yeah, I want to know how he feels all the way going up to it."

As The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported, it sounds like Williams' status will be a "true game-time decision."

In response to Shanahan's characterization of his status, Williams commented, "I agree. We're gonna see."

Williams participated in the 49ers' last two practices, his first time rejoining his teammates on the field since suffering an ankle sprain on October 15 against the Cleveland Browns.

When asked how he felt during those Thursday and Friday sessions, Williams responded, "It's getting better. It's improving. Obviously, playing in the game is different in intensity, but we'll see."

Williams acknowledges the wear and tear on his right leg over the last two decades of playing football, saying, "I sprained that one plenty of times, so you know how it is."

Regarding his status for Sunday, the offensive lineman added, "It's up in the air; it really is." That seems like an appropriate analysis. After all, concerns extend to the impact of the flight to Jacksonville on his ankle.

Williams noted, "Luckily now, sports medicine, we got devices you can use on the plane ride to help keep the inflammation down and keep it compressed."

Williams acknowledged the possibility that playing through the injury against the Browns might have prolonged his recovery time. However, in the moment, he was committed to supporting his teammates and didn't want Jaylon Moore to be thrown into the game against defensive end Myles Garrett.

The 49ers have been pleased with Moore's performance in place of Williams, allowing the All-Pro tackle the time necessary to recover.

"I think Jaylon's played his butt off," Williams told reporters. "I've been really, really impressed with the way he's performed. Obviously, I watched it closely the last few games, so I've been really impressed with his progress that he's made from last year to this year, even from the preseason to now. He details his work. He's definitely a young, improving player, and I got a lot of faith in him if he had to do it again."
