Immediately after speaking to reporters via a conference call, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch joined Bay Area radio station KNBR for an interview.
Covering back-to-back interviews with the 49ers' decision-maker made for a busy morning. However, the good news is that much of the discussion surrounding the trade for defensive end Chase Young in the later conversation was simply a rehash of what Lynch had just told the media.
There were other topics of discussion, of course. Notably the 49ers' recent struggles during their three-game losing streak. The general manager discussed the recent performances of quarterback Brock Purdy and defensive end Nick Bosa.
Entering Week 6, Purdy had yet to throw an interception this season. However, in the last three games, opposing defenses have secured five Purdy-thrown passes.
"I think Brock is an excellent football player," Lynch said on the "Murph and Mac" show. "You have to own those [interceptions]. Brock does. He's as accountable as anybody. I think Brock, in those situations, we're not used to playing from behind. I think we've been playing from behind a little bit the last couple of weeks and he's been pressing to try to make plays.
"We've just all got to get back to who we are, what we do, and our winning ways. And like I keep saying, don't look outward, look inward, and we'll get back on track because we've got too many good players and too much character in this building, and we've got really good coaches, and we've got really good guys, and guys that care."
Lynch sees the bye week as a valuable chance for the 49ers to reset and anticipates that the team will return from the break much improved.
Then there's the case of Nick Bosa. Despite holding one of the top three pass-rushing grades by Pro Football Focus this season, Bosa has faced a challenging time reaching opposing quarterbacks compared to previous seasons. While he racked up an NFL-leading 18.5 sacks last season, he has only mustered three through eight games this year.
"Nick Bosa is dominating," Lynch declared. "That's what I would tell [you]. I think if you know football, turn on that film. And yes, it's frustrating because you're like, 'Man, why isn't it resulting in sack after sack?'
"The attention this guy gets, what he does to the guy in front of him, I'm not a huge believer in these PFF grades, but I think he's one of the highest, if not the highest ranked defense lineman in football, and that's because down in, down out, he whoops the guy. And usually it's not a guy, it's guys, because he gets so much attention.
"We've got to collectively get better, and Nick is such a pro. On these bye weeks, we encourage people to get away. But I know with Bosa, [I'll ask], 'What are you doing?' [He'll respond], 'I'm going to be in the gym.' That's what he does. He eats, sleeps, breathes all that. And Nick is going to be just fine.
"Collectively, we've got to do things better, and I'm really encouraged that we will, and we've got to do it. But believe me, Nick Bosa is the least of our worries."
