San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Danny Gray underwent X-rays after Saturday's 21-20 preseason win over the Denver Broncos to determine the extent of a shoulder injury. Gray got the first chance to return in-game kicks on special teams, replacing wide receiver Ray-Ray McCloud, who sustained a broken wrist during training camp.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke to reporters via a conference call on Sunday, the day after the game, and provided some injury updates.
Gray sustained a right SC joint sprain.
"No fracture, but we're still evaluating his timeline," Shanahan said. "... We were worried it was a broken collarbone, which is usually about eight weeks. But it is still a pretty bad injury. It's no break, which is good, but it's similar to what [S] George Odum is dealing with. So it's still not great news, but it's better than a break."
The 49ers don't expect Gray to be ready for the start of the regular season.
Shanahan provided the following additional updates:
DL Kerry Hyder (stinger) may miss Friday's game against the Chargers
RB Jeremy McNichols (hamstring) will miss a few weeks
The 49ers will begin preparations this week for its final preseason game, a Friday-night matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi's Stadium. The team will kick off the regular season in 21 days, on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Shanahan hopes the following players will return to practice this week:
