The San Francisco 49ers have one more preseason game remaining, an August 25 matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers at Levi's Stadium. The starters got some playing time on Saturday against the Denver Broncos and will get more against the Chargers.

After Saturday's game, Kyle Shanahan was asked if that would be it for quarterback Brock Purdy during the preseason.

"No, the starters will play next week," the coach responded.

Saturday was Purdy's first in-game action since the NFC Championship Game, when he suffered a torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow.

"He's just been doing a good job in practice," Shanahan said. "When we started out, I didn't think he'd go until the third game, but just after the week of practice, I wanted to get him out there with the starters, most of them at least.

"The goal was to get him one drive. I told him if we went three-and-out, I wasn't sure what I would do, but I was glad they got a long one."

Purdy went 4-of-5 for 65 yards and a passer rating of 118.8, leading a game-opening 68-yard drive that ended with a field goal. He also rushed the ball for eight yards and was sacked once.

The exhibition game against the Chargers will be the final test before the start of the regular season. San Francisco kicks off Week 1 on the road against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been impressing with his recent performances, leading all NFL quarterbacks in various categories. However, many still doubt his status among the NFL's elite. Following a dominating Thanksgiving win over the Seattle Seahawks to conclude their November slate of games, even Purdy's skeptics are beginning to acknowledge the 23-year-old's potential to lead the 49ers to a Super Bowl victory. After Thursday's game, head coach Kyle Shanahan fielded questions from reporters, including whether he would categorize Purdy as elite and if he considers the player a Super Bowl-caliber quarterback. Shanahan initially hesitated in his response,

What has surprised Kyle Shanahan about 'impressive' 49ers QB Brock Purdy

Heading into last year's draft, there was much speculation about quarterback Brock Purdy's arm strength—or perceived lack thereof. This narrative persisted even after the San Francisco 49ers selected him as the final overall pick and continued as the rookie quarterback took over the starting role due to injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. Then, many questioned his effectiveness on deeper passes following offseason surgery to repair a torn UCL in his throwing arm. This season, only Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence boasts a superior Pro Football Focus grade when throwing beyond 20 yards (97.4 vs. 97.2). Additionally, when targeting players beyond that mark, Purdy trails only Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud in passer rating

Steve Young highlights remaining area of growth for 49ers QB Brock Purdy

Brock Purdy was perfect on Sunday during the San Francisco 49ers' 27-14 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—at least regarding passer rating. The quarterback completed 21 of his 25 passing attempts for 333 yards and three touchdowns, earning a perfect passer rating of 158.3. Steve Young, the former ESPN analyst and Hall of Fame player, believes there remains room for improvement. He emphasized that Purdy, drafted as the final overall pick last year, doesn't fit the prototype of quarterbacks selected higher in the draft, such as Jalen Hurts and C.J. Stroud, who possess different physical qualities. "He's not the prototype,"
