According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the San Francisco 49ers have not discussed a potential trade with quarterback Trey Lance. That shouldn't surprise anyone, but the coach was asked about trade discussions after Tuesday's practice.

Second-year quarterback Brock Purdy is trending well in his recovery from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He is doing some limited throwing about three times a week and will ramp up his workload in the coming months.

The 49ers remain optimistic that Purdy could start practicing in late August and potentially be the team's Week 1 starter against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Grant Cohn of Sports Illustrated asked Shanahan if the team has spoken to Lance about a potential trade should Purdy be the Week 1 starter.

"No," Shanahan responded before moving on to the next question.

The 49ers invested a lot in Lance, making him the No. 3 overall draft pick in 2021. Last year, the team added Purdy with the last overall draft pick. Purdy was the 49ers' starting quarterback for last season's final eight games after injuries to Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. If healthy, Purdy is the frontrunner to be San Francisco's starter to open the upcoming season.

That leaves Lance and veteran Sam Darnold competing for the QB2 job. The two have been switching off with first-team reps. As 2022 proved, you can never have too many quarterbacks. The 49ers went through four quarterbacks last season and didn't have a healthy one in the NFC Championship Game loss against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Potential trap game? Talanoa Hufanga, 49ers not looking past Cardinals, Joshua Dobbs

By David Bonilla

Everyone is excited about the Week 5 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys, two Super Bowl hopefuls in the NFC. However, the Niners have a game scheduled before that clash of conference titans. San Francisco will host the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, and there is no way head coach Kyle Shanahan or his players are looking past their next opponent. After all, the Cardinals are coming off a stunning 28-16 win over the Cowboys. "If I told you we were looking ahead to Dallas, we'd be in a bad situation," safety Talanoa Hufanga said Tuesday morning on KNBR's "Murph and Mac" show. "I got great people around me, great coaches that are prepping us for Arizona. It's a great team. "They've beat Dallas. I know they lost to the Giants

49ers' Kyle Shanahan: We have to do better with our RB rotation

By David Bonilla

Christian McCaffrey played 57 offensive snaps on Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. The next closest running back was ... no one. No other running back took the field with the offense during the 30-23 win at SoFi Stadium. That was not the plan going into the Week 2 game. McCaffrey has now taken 115 snaps through two games this season. The only other running back who has lined up with the offense is Elijah Mitchell, who had 10 snaps in Week 1. "Yeah, we definitely got to get Elijah in there more and do better with our rotation than we did yesterday," head coach Kyle Shanahan said via a conference call on Monday. "That wasn't the plan going in. It just ended up that way,

Kyle Shanahan: 49ers still have "got to improve" despite 3-0 start

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Sep 23

The San Francisco 49ers improved to 3-0 on the season after a 30-12 victory over the New York Giants on Thursday Night Football—dominating from the jump and never letting up a two-possession lead after a 17-6 advantage going into halftime. However, that dominating performance doesn't mean that the 49ers played at their peak, at least according to Kyle Shanahan, who was pleased with his team's play on a tough Thursday night, but still pointed out a couple of improvements to look at going forward. "Yeah, definitely, [I still think we have some work to do]," Shanahan said. "We did real good, time of possession, I think we had like 40 minutes. I thought our defense played real well. I thought they stepped it up. They started doing that in the second half last

49ers' Nick Bosa "getting back into his groove," says Kyle Shanahan

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has had time to review the film from Sunday's 30-23 win over the division-rival Los Angeles Rams. What is his assessment of his now-highly-compensated defensive end, Nick Bosa? "I think he's getting back into football shape, getting back into his groove," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Monday via a conference call. "I thought he got better and stronger throughout the game, similar to last week in that aspect. I thought he finished the game real strong and took a step forward from Pittsburgh." Bosa earned Pro Football Focus' highest grade
