The San Francisco 49ers expect their second-year quarterback, Brock Purdy, to start throwing again this week. Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury sustained on January 29 in the NFC Championship Game. The expectations were always for the quarterback to start throwing again in early June.

Purdy won't be doing anything excessive at first. He will likely be limited as this portion of his rehabilitation begins, and his workload will ramp up in the coming months.

Purdy's return timeline remains up in the air. However, the team will know more once he starts throwing again. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch remain hopeful that Purdy can return some time during training camp, which begins in late July and runs through August.

Until Purdy's return, Trey Lance and Sam Darnold will compete for the backup quarterback job and a chance to start Week 1—should Purdy be unavailable. Although, Shanahan recently expressed optimism that Purdy leading the offense against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10 remains a possibility.

"[W]e're hoping for Week 1, and I feel pretty optimistic about that," Shanahan said earlier this month. "That's what we're hoping for—he'll be ready to play in Week 1, and usually, that doesn't mean that's the day he comes back. Usually, you got to come before that to make that goal, and that's kind of the goal we're hoping for, and don't have any reason to think differently."

While his coach is optimistic, Purdy is taking a one-day-at-a-time approach to his recovery, unwilling to set any potential return dates in stone.

"I feel good. Arm is feeling good," Purdy said last week. "So to say I'm going to be ready by this time or this time, we're not trying to label any kind of timeline like that. For sure, though. [Week 1 is] a goal, right? You want to be ready for the season, and if that's the case, great. But like I said, we're just taking it one day at a time and don't want to say anything that we regret down the road or whatever."

The 49ers are in their second week of organized team activities (OTAs), which run through June 8 and are followed by a three-day mandatory minicamp on June 13. After that, players will break for the summer before returning for training camp. Purdy will head back to the East Coast during that time.

"Yeah, we got to finish out everything through OTAs here," Purdy said. "See how I feel, but I think the plan would be good back down to Jacksonville with my quarterback guys I trained with before the draft, Tom Gormely and Will Hewlett, as I start to throw more and I want to just make sure my mechanics and everything are right. So go down, work with them for a couple of weeks, and then get back here."

New San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall was a teammate of Brandon Aiyuk for one season (2019) at Arizona State. It was Aiyuk's final season with the Sun Devils and Pearsall's first, before transferring to Florida after the 2021 season. Now, the two are teammates again after the 49ers selected Pearsall with the No. 31 overall pick. Speaking to reporters after the first round, general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that they received a text from Aiyuk after the pick was made. "Fire pick. Can't lie," Aiyuk said in the text, much to Lynch and Shanahan's delight. Shortly after hearing his name called, Pearsall spoke to reporters via Zoom and was asked about his relationship with Aiyuk. Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

Taylor Swift, the Kansas City Chiefs, and a Super Bowl overtime matchup. If the NFL is scripted, the league came up with a good one this past season—unless you're a San Francisco 49ers fan. During his inaugural youth football camp at Levi's Stadium this past weekend, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy faced a candid inquiry from one young participant: Is the NFL scripted? "No, the NFL is not scripted," a smiling Purdy responded. However, the quarterback added, "Good

New San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Ricky Pearsall arrived in Santa Clara this morning, ready to tour his new NFL home before speaking with the media. Pearsall briefly spoke to reporters via Zoom on Thursday night after learning that the 49ers had selected him as the No. 31 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. During that conversation, he revealed that he had once played against Brock Purdy in high school, acknowledging that the now-49ers quarterback had put up about 70 points against his team. Pearsall had an opportunity to speak to Purdy after learning they had become teammates. "He just reached out to me this morning, just congratulating me, saying, 'We're going to get to work,'" Pearsall shared. "... We're gonna get to work, for sure. And he's from Arizona,
