Twenty NFL teams begin organized team activities (OTAs) today, including the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners will hold workouts on the following dates.
- May 22-23
- May 25
- May 30-31
- June 2
- June 5-6
- June 8
The 49ers started their offseason program on April 17. The first two weeks, or Phase One, were limited to meetings, strength and conditioning, and physical rehabilitation.
Phase Two included on-field workouts with individual and group instruction and drills. No live contact or team drills were permitted.
NFL teams may conduct a total of 10 days of OTAs during Phase Three. San Francisco has nine scheduled. While no live contact is permitted during these sessions, 7-on-7, 9-on-7, and 11-on-11 drills are allowed. Participation in OTAs is voluntary.
The 49ers will allow the media to observe practice on Tuesday, May 23, at 12:30 p.m. Head coach Kyle Shanahan is scheduled to speak with reporters after that practice.
Quarterback
Brock Purdy continues to recover from his March 10 surgery to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He is expected to miss most or all of the offseason. However, the 49ers remain hopeful that Purdy might return before the end of training camp, which begins in late July and runs through August.
Third-year quarterback
Trey Lance and sixth-year veteran
Sam Darnold will split the offseason practice reps until Purdy's return.

49ers expect Brock Purdy to begin throwing this week
The San Francisco 49ers expect their second-year quarterback, Brock Purdy, to start throwing again this week. Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury sustained on January 29 in the NFC Championship Game. The expectations were always for the quarterback to start throwing again in early June.
Purdy won't be doing anything excessive at first. He will likely be limited as this portion of his rehabilitation begins, and his workload will ramp up in the coming months.
Purdy's return timeline remains up in the air. However, the team will know more once he starts throwing again. Head
What to make of Jeff Darlington's report on 49ers QB Trey Lance's first-team reps
ESPN's Jeff Darlington recently appeared on the network's NFL Live show and discussed the San Francisco 49ers' quarterback situation, highlighting Trey Lance's healthy state and current workload during organized team activities (OTAs).
"Trey Lance is the guy during OTAs who's been taking all the 1st-team reps; he's healthy at this point," Darlington said, per Dov Kleiman of BroBible. "Sam Darnold really getting backup duty as he kinda gets his playbook under his belt. But for now, Trey Lance getting his opportunity with those first-team reps."
What is the takeaway from these comments? Nothing, really. We
Sam Darnold working with first-team offense during 49ers OTAs
A somewhat bigger-than-necessary deal was made last week when reporters saw San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance taking the first-team reps in the first practice of organized team activities (OTAs) open to reporters.
After the practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked what, if anything, could be concluded from that.
"It'll even out," Shanahan assured reporters. "We'll make sure to get that right."
The coach made a point to add, "And the first-team is kind of funny because there's no [offensive] line out there. Most of our receivers are second- and third-team on the first-team today, so I'm curious what everyone thinks first- and second- and third-team is."
