Do the San Francisco 49ers regret making defensive tackle
Javon Kinlaw a first-round pick in 2020? You will get very different answers to that question on social media than the answers from the team's top decision-makers.
Kinlaw has only appeared in 10 games over the past two seasons, dealing with the knee injury that was a concern coming out of South Carolina. The defensive tackle had reconstructive knee surgery in 2021. A setback this past season forced him to miss 11 games.
When Kinlaw
has played, he has failed to make an impact on the defensive side of the ball. He has earned only 1.5 sacks in three NFL seasons, and his 31.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus for the 2022 season (including the playoffs) was the lowest on the team.
RELATED 49ers have no plans to trade Javon Kinlaw, per report
Earlier this month, the 49ers made a significant move, stealing away defensive tackle
Javon Hargrave from the Philadelphia Eagles in free agency, bolstering the interior of the defensive front. Many felt that signaled an admission that drafting Kinlaw, entering the final year of his rookie deal, was a mistake.
One reporter asked general manager John Lynch, speaking at the NFL owners' meetings in Arizona, if the Hargrave addition meant the 49ers no longer saw Kinlaw as a potential game-changer.
"I don't think so," Lynch responded. "… I'm really excited for Javon [Kinlaw] because he's going into an offseason healthy. And I think we're committed to him and watching him be part of this group, and he's excited about that."
The 49ers added Hargrave and defensive end
Clelin Ferrell (Raiders) but lost defensive linemen Samson Ebukam (Colts), Maurice Hurst (Browns), Charles Omenihu (Chiefs), Hassan Ridgeway (Texans), and Jordan Willis (Raiders). So it would be beneficial if Kinlaw could contribute during the upcoming season.
San Francisco is not expected to exercise the fifth-year option on Kinlaw, likely signaling a departure in 2024. This year, there are no plans to move off the defensive tackle. Instead, the 49ers will look for Kinlaw to prove himself and stay healthy.
"And maybe it hasn't gone, because of the injuries, hasn't gone as well as we all might have anticipated or, I think, as well as it would have had he been healthy," Lynch said. "That's part of this thing. And so now, he is healthy, he gets to be a part … of our rotation, and we're really excited about that."

What 49ers coach Kris Kocurek said about Drake Jackson, Javon Hargrave, Javon Kinlaw
Drake Jackson looks better prepared for his sophomore NFL season, both physically and mentally. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end spoke with reporters this week, and reports of his added bulk were visually confirmed. He estimates he has gained about 13 pounds since last season, and the work continues.
His defensive line coach, Kris Kocurek, believes the added weight and better preparation will help Jackson last through the rigors of an NFL season. The coach has seen "significant strength gain" in his young defender.
Jackson was inactive for six of the 49ers' final eight games last season, including each of the team's three playoff contests. Being forced to watch from
John Lynch: 49ers 'incredibly encouraged' after Brock Purdy throwing session
Brock Purdy started throwing this week, and it sounds like the San Francisco 49ers are pleased with their second-year quarterback's progress. While Purdy isn't doing anything overly taxing, it is the first time he is throwing a football—albeit reportedly a lighter-weighted one.
Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. His recovery is expected to last into late August or early September—barring any setbacks.
"There are certain markers that you hit," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "He was 12 weeks out, and that meant it was time to throw. He did so and
Why John Lynch believes 49ers QB Brock Purdy is the "real deal"

Over the offseason, there has been significant talk surrounding the San Francisco 49ers and their quarterbacks, especially after the team signed Sam Darnold in free agency, providing them three capable options with starting experience in the former Carolina Panther, Brock Purdy, and Trey Lance.
Purdy is evidently the leader in the clubhouse, as stated by general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan several times this offseason, but many have pointed out his flaws, such as the inability to make throws downfield, as a reason why one of the other quarterbacks could win over the starting job with a strong performance in organized team activities(OTAs) and training camp.
What do the 49ers believe about Purdy's downfield ability?

John Lynch: 49ers QB Trey Lance having a 'really, really quality offseason'
During an interview with SiriusXM NFL Radio, San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch once again called Brock Purdy the "leader in the clubhouse" when it comes to the team's starting quarterback job. Purdy earned that with his superb play last season as a rookie, helping guide the 49ers to eight consecutive wins before an NFC Championship Game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Purdy suffered a UCL tear in that game and will miss most or all of this offseason. That opens the door for Trey Lance or Sam Darnold to impress coaches and potentially climb the depth chart. Lance opened last season as the 49ers' starter but suffered a season-ending ankle injury during Week 2.
The 49ers haven't lost faith in their former No. 3 overall draft pick. They still see a lot
