Expect 49ers Javon Kinlaw to Have a Breakout Year

Mar 30, 2023 at 8:45 AM--

The San Francisco 49ers drafted Javon Kinlaw with the 14th overall pick in 2020. Since being drafted, Kinlaw has only participated in 858 snaps. His career totals are as follows: 29 pressures, 1.5 sacks, four QB hits, and 22 hurries. Kinlaw also has two batted-down passes, 45 total tackles, and one interception for a touchdown. For a first-round defensive tackle, these numbers aren't eye-popping.

Kinlaw enters the fourth year of his contract. According to reports, the 49ers don't plan to exercise the fifth-year option on Kinlaw. General manager John Lynch stated that the team doesn't plan to trade him and that his surgically repaired knee is much improved, per Cam Inman.

"That will allow defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw to work part-time in a robust rotation," wrote Inman. "Kinlaw, by the way, is starting this offseason with a healthier knee than in past years. The 49ers have no designs to trade him ahead of the fourth (and final) year of his rookie contract."

So what has been the cause of Kinlaw's unproductive play on the football field? The answer, in simplest form, is his injuries. Kinlaw hasn't been able to put together successful gameplay because of his inability to be on the field. In the 2022 season, he went on the injured reserve list due to his ongoing knee issues, which reached a tipping point during the Week 3 game against the Denver Broncos.

"Now he is healthy," Lynch said. "He gets to be a part of how we rotate guys in and out. He's going to be part of that rotation."

With the addition former-Eagle Javon Hargrave, Kinlaw will slot into the rotation of defensive linemen, meaning fresh legs, less wear and tear, and less pressure on him being an every-down defensive tackle. With Kinlaw healthy, this helps the 49ers and tremendously helps his value.

Expect the defensive tackle to have a breakout year with the 49ers.

What 49ers coach Kris Kocurek said about Drake Jackson, Javon Hargrave, Javon Kinlaw

By David Bonilla

Drake Jackson looks better prepared for his sophomore NFL season, both physically and mentally. The San Francisco 49ers defensive end spoke with reporters this week, and reports of his added bulk were visually confirmed. He estimates he has gained about 13 pounds since last season, and the work continues. His defensive line coach, Kris Kocurek, believes the added weight and better preparation will help Jackson last through the rigors of an NFL season. The coach has seen "significant strength gain" in his young defender. Jackson was inactive for six of the 49ers' final eight games last season, including each of the team's three playoff contests. 49ers OL Spencer Burford poised for breakout season in Year 2

By Rohan Chakravarthi

On a team with as much talent as the San Francisco 49ers, there isn't always much space for rookies to carve out an immediate role, let alone be a starter. That's why it was impressive that rookie Spencer Burford not only shined early, separating himself during organized team activities(OTAs), but took a starting role as a fourth-rounder. However, Burford split in-season reps with veteran Daniel Brunskill in a season with ups and downs, questioning the 49ers' belief in his play as a rookie. But, with Brunskill off to the Tennessee Titans in free agency, the path is clear for the UTSA product to carve out an everyday role in a potential breakout season for Burford during his second season. Speaking with reporters for the first time this

NFL Media personality Adam Rank recently published his "State of the 2023 San Francisco 49ers" feature for NFL.com, an annual look at the state of the franchise and projections for the upcoming season. Among those predictions are the team's most valuable player and breakout star. Christian McCaffrey is the most obvious choice for MVP, and he's the guy Rank selected. The star running back was traded in late October to the 49ers and still contributed 1,210 total yards and 10 total touchdowns with his new team, totaling an impressive 1,880 yards and 13 touchdowns on the season. Rank can't wait to see what McCaffrey does for an encore

Doctor on 49ers QB Brock Purdy injury: "You should expect to get that same level of play"

By Rohan Chakravarthi

The San Francisco 49ers are entangled in yet another quarterback controversy, with Brock Purdy at the forefront of the talk due to a UCL injury that he sustained during the team's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Given the rarity of the injury to a quarterback in the NFL, the 49ers have stressed caution on Purdy's recovery timetable, while expressing optimism about his return by the beginning of the season. Speaking with former NFL offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, respected sports medicine doctor Jess Flynn, who has worked with NFL teams, shared that the 49ers should expect Purdy to return to his former self once back from injury. "When he does come back, studies show that you should expect a similar level of play compared to before the
