Ben Roethlisberger says 49ers reached out after Jimmy Garoppolo injury

The San Francisco 49ers made a call to former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during the 2022 season after Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a broken foot. Despite rookie
Brock Purdy stepping in and leading the team to a December 4 win over the Miami Dolphins, the 49ers understandably opted to look into all their options, including finding out if Roethlisberger might be interested in temporarily pausing his retirement.
"Last year,
there were some truths to the Niners thing," Roethlisberger told Mark Madden at 105.9 The X,
per KNBR. "They were, I think, reaching out maybe just to gauge my interest. I had discussions. I don't want to sit here and say I was going or anything like that. They called me to gauge interest…"
San Francisco was 8-4 at the time and winners of five consecutive games. They appeared to be playoff bound and boasted a defense that was playing much better than earlier in the season.
"I'd be lying if I didn't say there was a small part of me that was intrigued, like, 'Oh man, I could still do it,' and prove to people that I could still play," Roethlisberger continued. "At the end of the day, I just can't see myself in anything other than black and gold.
"Even though they had a great chance, I think, to win a Super Bowl, it would've been hard for me to go try and win a Super Bowl anywhere else but here."
There was a report that Philip Rivers contacted the 49ers around the same time. Although, the retired NFL quarterback later denied that report, stating, "
I heard from a couple of teams just kind of checking in," indicating that it may have been San Francisco doing the reaching out.
Things ended up working out well for the 49ers' quarterback situation—at least until the NFC Championship Game. Purdy was a pleasant surprise, winning seven consecutive starts (including the playoffs) before suffering a tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC title game.
Purdy is expected to be fully recovered sometime in September.
San Francisco added veteran Sam Darnold to a quarterback room that also includes former No. 3 overall pick
Trey Lance, the most likely candidate to start Week 1 with the end of Purdy's expected recovery time nearing the start of the regular season.
Garoppolo departed the 49ers,
signing a three-year free-agent deal with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Kyle Shanahan says 49ers have not discussed potential trade with Trey Lance
According to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the San Francisco 49ers have not discussed a potential trade with quarterback Trey Lance. That shouldn't surprise anyone, but the coach was asked about trade discussions after Tuesday's practice.
Second-year quarterback Brock Purdy is trending well in his recovery from surgery to repair the torn ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow. He is doing some limited throwing about three times a week and will ramp up his workload in the coming months.

49ers' Nick Bosa focused on building legacy, reaching Canton, says Steve Wilks
San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa has already earned the coveted NFL Defensive Player of the Year award, three years after being named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. According to new 49ers defensive coordinator Steve Wilks, the talented pass rusher has his eyes set on more significant achievements.
Wilks believes Bosa is among the few who are completely dedicated to their craft and trying to get better every day, comparing the 49ers defender to players like Luke Kuechly and Brian Urlacher.
"And all those guys that I just mentioned, along with Bosa, is about really trying to create a legacy," Wilks said on Wednesday. "And that was probably one of the things that I did talk about, beyond just him as a person. It's just What are we building
John Lynch: 49ers 'incredibly encouraged' after Brock Purdy throwing session
Brock Purdy started throwing this week, and it sounds like the San Francisco 49ers are pleased with their second-year quarterback's progress. While Purdy isn't doing anything overly taxing, it is the first time he is throwing a football—albeit reportedly a lighter-weighted one.
Purdy underwent surgery on March 10 to repair the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow, an injury suffered against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game. His recovery is expected to last into late August or early September—barring any setbacks.
"There are certain markers that you hit," general manager John Lynch said Wednesday morning on SiriusXM NFL Radio. "He was 12 weeks out, and that meant it was time to throw. He did so and
Doctor on 49ers QB Brock Purdy injury: "You should expect to get that same level of play"

The San Francisco 49ers are entangled in yet another quarterback controversy, with Brock Purdy at the forefront of the talk due to a UCL injury that he sustained during the team's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Given the rarity of the injury to a quarterback in the NFL, the 49ers have stressed caution on Purdy's recovery timetable, while expressing optimism about his return by the beginning of the season.
Speaking with former NFL offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg, respected sports medicine doctor Jess Flynn, who has worked with NFL teams, shared that the 49ers should expect Purdy to return to his former self once back from injury.
"When he does come back, studies show that you should expect a similar level of play compared to before the
