49ers DE Charles Omenihu arrested after domestic violence allegation

Jan 24, 2023 at 8:56 AM--

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Charles Omenihu has been arrested in San Jose following allegations of domestic violence. The Mercury News reported that police were called to the player's home in San Jose, and the 25-year-old was booked at the Santa Clara County jail and then released after posting bail.

"Police officers were called to Omenihu's home in the 300 block of Santana Row at 4:39 p.m. for a report of domestic violence," wrote Robert Salonga of the Mercury News. "Upon arriving, a woman told officers that Omenihu is her boyfriend and that he 'pushed her to the ground during an argument.'

"A police news release stated that the woman complained of arm pain but that 'officers did not observe any visible physical injuries,' and that she declined medical attention."

Omenihu was at the location when officers arrived and was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor domestic violence. The police obtained an emergency protective order for the alleged victim. It was served to the 49ers defensive end.

"We are aware of the matter involving Charles Omenihu and are in the process of gathering further information," the 49ers said via a statement issued by the team.

The 49ers are preparing to face the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field. Omenihu arrived at the 49ers via a trade from the Houston Texans on November 2, 2021. During the regular season, he registered career-highs in tackles (20) and sacks (4.5).

Omenihu recorded two sacks in San Francisco's first playoff game, a Wild Card win over the Seattle Seahawks. He played 15 defensive snaps against the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said the defensive end was day-to-day this week due to an oblique strain.

January 25 Update

The NFL released the following statement regarding the Omenihu situation: "The matter will be reviewed under the league's personal conduct policy. There is no change to his status."

The San Francisco 49ers are facing off against the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship on Sunday, with the winner facing off against either the Cincinnati Bengals or the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. This is a stage familiar for the 49ers, as they've made the NFC Championship Game in three of the past four seasons now, losing to the Los Angeles Rams last season, while going to the Super Bowl in 2019 after a win over the Green Bay Packers. However, despite seeing consistent success, the 49ers haven't accomplished their No. 1 goal: winning a Super Bowl, which has left a chip on their shoulder as they strive to hit that goal this season. When asked about the topic, wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk agreed with the sentiment about having a chip
