49ers’ Kyle Shanahan still not optimistic about Jimmy Garoppolo’s return this week

Jan 23, 2023 at 12:09 PM--

It seems it's time for your weekly Jimmy Garoppolo update. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been sidelined since suffering a broken foot on December 4. However, there is a slight chance Garoppolo could return and suit up for the playoffs, likely serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup.

That probably won't be this week, though.

Last week, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the quarterback probably wouldn't be ready for an NFC Championship Game appearance. However, Garoppolo suiting up for the Super Bowl, should the 49ers make it that far, might be more likely.

On Monday, Shanahan was once again asked about Garoppolo's recovery and if the quarterback might return to practice this week.

"I don't think so," Shanahan responded. "I think he gets X-rayed tomorrow to see how things are going. I believe so. But, same as last week, I'd be very surprised if he was out there this week."

Shanahan added that Garoppolo hasn't been as involved in team meetings as much as the team's other injured quarterback, Trey Lance. Lance is recovering from an ankle injury suffered in Week 2.

"Jimmy's always doing his rehab and stuff, and on a different schedule," Shanahan noted.

The coach added that Lance has been doing a good job helping Purdy prepare for games. Purdy has now won seven consecutive starts, including Sunday's 19-12 playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys.

San Francisco opted not to place Garoppolo on injured reserve, making his potential return possible. The quarterback is scheduled to be a free agent after the season.

49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo says Super Bowl return 'still up in the air'

By David Bonilla
Jan 27

The San Francisco 49ers have officially ruled out quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo for this weekend's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That wasn't unexpected. The chances of the former starter suiting up for Sunday's playoff bout, backing up rookie Brock Purdy, were slim. "Yeah, it's just been an outside chance the whole time, and that was still an outside chance," head coach Kyle Shanahan said Thursday, before that outside chance turned into no chance. The 49ers never placed Garoppolo on injured reserve, leaving the door open for a playoff return. However, we are now down to just one more game as a possibility—Super

Kyle Shanahan doesn't see Jimmy Garoppolo returning to 49ers, isn't looking to add a veteran starting QB

ers It remains to be seen how things will play out at the quarterback position for the San Francisco 49ers in 2023, but one thing the team doesn't appear to be interested in is adding another front line veteran to the picture who is capable of excelling as a starter if things didn't work out with Brock Purdy or Trey Lance. That includes Jimmy Garoppolo, whose time with the 49ers appears to have come to an end. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan addressed the quarterback situation during his year-end press conference Wednesday, which included questions about what kind of quarterback the team might look to add in the weeks ahead. Speculation swirled recently over the possibility of the 49ers being interested in Tom Brady before he announced his retirement earlier on

Kyle Shanahan hopes to not lose DeMeco Ryans but knows 49ers coordinator is ready for a head coach job

By David Bonilla

The San Francisco 49ers' defensive coordinator, DeMeco Ryans, is a hot name in head coaching searches. The assistant coach has already interviewed with the Denver Broncos and Houston Texans. The Arizona Cardinals and Indianapolis Colts still hope to speak with Ryans about their head coach vacancies. Right now, Ryans and the 49ers are focused on their NFC Championship Game opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles. Players know their time with the defensive coordinator is running out, though. In their minds, there is no doubt that Ryans will thrive as a head coach, whether that be after this season or down the road. "He's going to be a great head coach," defensive end Nick Bosa told reporters on Wednesday. "I think he's as good as it gets when it comes to the scheme on

49ers mailbag: Will 49ers sign a big-name QB? Who will Ryans take to Houston? Who will replace Ryans? Will Garoppolo return?

There's not much going on with the San Francisco 49ers. Not unless you count these small bits of news: Brock Purdy has a UCL tear and will likely need surgery. If they can repair the tendon, he'll need six months of recovery time (which is August). If they have to replace it (Tommy John surgery), it will be decidedly longer. Trey Lance says he is three to four weeks from being cleared to practice, and that he should be 100% by OTAs (organized team activities). Trent Williams was walking with a crutch on Tuesday (locker cleanout day) and had a walking boot on. But he said it's nothing. DeMeco Ryans was hired to be the next head coach of the Houston Texans. Tom Brady announced his retirement Wednesday morning, so those hoping he
