49ers’ Kyle Shanahan still not optimistic about Jimmy Garoppolo’s return this week

Jan 23, 2023 at 12:09 PM--

It seems it's time for your weekly Jimmy Garoppolo update. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback has been sidelined since suffering a broken foot on December 4. However, there is a slight chance Garoppolo could return and suit up for the playoffs, likely serving as rookie Brock Purdy's backup.

That probably won't be this week, though.

Last week, head coach Kyle Shanahan stated that the quarterback probably wouldn't be ready for an NFC Championship Game appearance. However, Garoppolo suiting up for the Super Bowl, should the 49ers make it that far, might be more likely.

On Monday, Shanahan was once again asked about Garoppolo's recovery and if the quarterback might return to practice this week.

"I don't think so," Shanahan responded. "I think he gets X-rayed tomorrow to see how things are going. I believe so. But, same as last week, I'd be very surprised if he was out there this week."

Shanahan added that Garoppolo hasn't been as involved in team meetings as much as the team's other injured quarterback, Trey Lance. Lance is recovering from an ankle injury suffered in Week 2.

"Jimmy's always doing his rehab and stuff, and on a different schedule," Shanahan noted.

The coach added that Lance has been doing a good job helping Purdy prepare for games. Purdy has now won seven consecutive starts, including Sunday's 19-12 playoff win over the Dallas Cowboys.

San Francisco opted not to place Garoppolo on injured reserve, making his potential return possible. The quarterback is scheduled to be a free agent after the season.

For the San Francisco 49ers, it meant the departure of 12 unrestricted free agents who found new homes with teams willing to pay them more for their services. "[W]hile I am happy for them and their families, I am also sad to be losing some of my closest friends for the last 5 years," tight end George Kittle posted on Instagram, discussing the initial flurry of roster activity at the start of the new league year. While there were more exits than arrivals, San Francisco added one big-name free agent—defensive lineman Javon Hargrave. It's a move that bolsters the interior of a

Jimmy Garoppolo, Mike McGlinchey, Emmanuel Moseley, and many others moved on to new NFL homes, signing deals with other teams in free agency. Garoppolo is the newest quarterback of the Las Vegas Raiders. On Friday, he spoke to Raiders reporters for the first time, first sharing a message to his team of the past five-and-a-half seasons (h/t Angelina Martin of NBC Sports Bay Area). "I just want to thank the Yorks, thank the 49ers for everything that they've done," Garoppolo told reporters after wishing them a happy St.

The San Francisco 49ers made a call to former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger during the 2022 season after Jimmy Garoppolo went down with a broken foot. Despite rookie Brock Purdy stepping in and leading the team to a December 4 win over the Miami Dolphins, the 49ers understandably opted to look into all their options, including finding out if Roethlisberger might be interested in temporarily pausing his retirement. "Last year, there were some truths to the Niners thing," Roethlisberger told Mark Madden at 105.9 The X,

The first week of NFL free agency is in the books, and there has been a lot of movement made by the San Francisco 49ers. The team added defensive tackle Javon Hargrave, quarterback Sam Darnold, and others to the roster. As is the case every year, departures are inevitable. Gone are some high-profile names like quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo (Raiders) and tackle Mike McGlinchey (Broncos). Key players like cornerback Emmanuel Moseley (Lions) and offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill (Titans) have also found new NFL homes. San Francisco has tendered a one-year deal to exclusive-rights free agent wide receiver Jauan Jennings. In addition, the following eight 49ers restricted or unrestricted free agents have returned to the team. C Jake
