San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey played through some knee irritation on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. While Kyle Shanahan didn't sound too concerned about the injury after the game, the 49ers coach said his running back would miss the first practice of the week as the team prepares to host the Miami Dolphins at Levi's Stadium on Sunday.

"He just felt something in it (during the game), some irritation," Shanahan told reporters before Wednesday's practice.

A reporter asked if there was any concern about his availability for this weekend. The coach paused and looked at his injury sheet before responding.

"It's keeping him from going today, so I hope not," Shanahan finally said.

Defensive end Charles Omenihu will also miss Wednesday's practice as he also deals with knee irritation.

"He was sore after the game," Shanahan said. "It's still sore, so we've got to be careful with it."

Defensive lineman Arik Armstead has not played since Week 4 due to foot and ankle injuries. He returned to practice last Friday but was inactive on Sunday against the Saints.

Armstead could be on the field this weekend against the Miami Dolphins. However, he'll need to get through this week's practices before the 49ers clear him to play. The defensive lineman will be limited on Wednesday.

Wide receiver Deebo Samuel is dealing with a quad injury and is also expected to be limited. Guard Spencer Burford, who suffered an ankle sprain on Sunday, will warm up with the team and see if he can make it through practice as a limited participant.

Jimmy Garoppolo was "pretty sore" on Monday after taking a hit to his knee from Saints defensive lineman Malcolm Roach the day before. However, Shanahan was hopeful his quarterback would feel good enough by Wednesday's practice, and it sounds like he does. Garoppolo is expected to be a full participant.
