The San Francisco 49ers won the Christian McCaffrey sweepstakes in a deal finalized late Thursday night, sending a 2023 second-round pick, third-round pick, and fourth-round pick, as well as a 2024 fifth-round pick to the Carolina Panthers.
Now, with the significant capital traded to acquire McCaffrey, many are wondering what the 49ers' draft situation currently looks like for the foreseeable future.
Here's a breakdown of San Francisco's current 2023 draft picks.
Updated 2023 Draft Picks
- Third-round pick (compensatory)
- Third-round pick (compensatory)
- Fifth-round pick
- Fifth-round pick (compensatory)
- Sixth-round pick (compensatory)
- Seventh-round pick
- Seventh-round pick (via Denver)
- Seventh-round pick (compensatory)
It's currently unclear whether the 49ers moved their own third-round selection or a compensatory third-round selection in 2023 for McCaffrey. In the current projection, they moved their own selection, although that information could come out later.
The 49ers already didn't have their own first-round selection as a result of the Trey Lance trade, so their first pick will currently come in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
Additionally, the 49ers will recoup two third-round compensatory picks for the respective hirings of Mike McDaniel and Robert Saleh, while earning a fifth-round compensatory pick for the loss of D.J. Jones, a sixth-round compensatory pick for the loss of Arden Key, and a seventh-round compensatory pick for the loss of Raheem Mostert.
Despite trading three picks away in the 2023 NFL Draft, the 49ers still have eight selections, which is why the trade wasn't as expensive, capital-wise, as many anticipated.
