49ers coach Kyle Shanahan explains decision to play Deommodore Lenoir vs. Broncos over Samuel Womack

Sep 26, 2022 at 2:42 PM--

After an impressive preseason, cornerback Samuel Womack played just two defensive snaps on Sunday night against the Denver Broncos. They weren't at slot cornerback, though. Instead, the San Francisco 49ers opted to go with second-year cornerback Deommodore Lenoir at that position, where he played 35 defensive snaps.

During a conference call on Monday, head coach Kyle Shanahan explained that decision.

"We just liked how he's been looking," Shanahan said. "We were trying to put the best people out there that we think gives us the best chance to win, and just from the last few weeks, and watching him practice and everything, we felt that was D-Mo, and I was real happy with how he played too. I thought he was one of the better guys out there last night."

Lenoir's 35 snaps were his most since Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers in 2021. He has earned a 61.9 overall grade from Pro Football Focus this season. Womack earned a 73.0 overall grade while playing 25 snaps at slot cornerback and five snaps at other defensive positions in Week 2 against the Seattle Seahawks.

The 49ers defense held the Broncos offense to just nine points on Sunday night. Two of their 11 total points came courtesy of quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, who stepped out of the back of the end zone in the third quarter, resulting in a safety.

The San Francisco 49ers added a veteran Pro Bowl cornerback today ... to the practice squad. The team signed former second-round draft pick Janoris Jenkins. During a conference call, head coach Kyle Shanahan was asked about the timing of the signing. Jenkins, after all, has been available all season. So why now? "Because he was willing to do it," Shanahan responded. "I don't think that was the case all year. We've been in contact with him for a little bit, and he was willing to do it. I've always been a fan of Janoris. I know most people have. He's played at a very high level in this league. "To get a player who's been like that throughout his career to come to our practice squad, we felt pretty fortunate. I think he gets here today, possibly

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel was limited all week during practices as the team prepares for its Week 12 matchup against the New Orleans Saints. When head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Wednesday, rattling off the names of those who would not practice or be limited, Samuel's name was absent. It wasn't until the official practice participation report was released that the wideout's injury was revealed to reporters. Samuel emerged from Monday night's win over the Arizona Cardinals with a hamstring injury. Although, it wasn't immediately known. And the injury was different than the Week 7 hamstring injury that occurred against the Kansas City Chiefs and kept him out the next week against the Los Angeles Rams. "No, it was something

The defensive lineman isn't alone in believing he will be out there this weekend. "We're just excited to get him back," head coach Kyle Shanahan said this morning on KNBR's Murph & Mac show. "He's had a great week, so everything's trending, definitely, for him to play. So as long as we don't have any setbacks today, he should be out there. "He's been a guy that we've been missing a lot. It's a huge presence in there,

Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel on facing 49ers' Kyle Shanahan, Nick Bosa

There are a lot of storylines surrounding the upcoming Week 13 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the Miami Dolphins. First, it features Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel going up against his former mentor, Kyle Shanahan. It will also feature running backs Raheem Mostert and Jeff Wilson Jr. returning to Levi's Stadium for the first time. But don't discount the storyline of McDaniel being concerned about facing the 49ers defense—specifically, Nick Bosa. On Monday, the Dolphins coach was asked about his concern about game planning for the 49ers' talented pass rusher without left tackle Terron Armstead, who has been ruled out due to a pectoral injury. "If Nick Bosa has a pulse, you're concerned," McDaniel responded (h/t
