49ers QB Trey Lance undergoes successful surgery, doctors expect full return for 2023 season

Sep 19, 2022 at 12:38 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers announced that quarterback Trey Lance underwent successful surgery on Monday. The second-year player suffered what was reported as a broken ankle during the first quarter of Sunday's 27-7 win over the Seattle Seahawks, ending his 2022 season.

"San Francisco 49ers quarterback Trey Lance underwent successful surgery on his injured right ankle this morning, an injury that occurred in yesterday's game versus the Seattle Seahawks," the 49ers said in a statement.

The team also provided more details on the injury itself.

"Surgery was performed at Stanford Hospital and repaired two injuries to Lance's ankle, a fibula fracture, and ligament disruption," the 49ers announced. "Lance will start the rehab process, and head team physician Dr. Tim McAdams is confident that he will recover completely in time for a full return in the 2023 season."

After the surgery, Lance shared the following photo via Twitter.

"Truly appreciate all of the messages and prayers," he wrote. "Surgery was a success and I am ready to attack this rehab process. We will never understand why, but I trust that it's all a part of His plan. I will be back better than ever. This chapter is going to make the story even greater!"

San Francisco made Lance the No. 3 overall pick in last year's draft. He entered this season as the team's starter. Jimmy Garoppolo replaced Lance after the injury. Unless unforeseen circumstances prevent him from doing so, Garoppolo will serve as the 49ers' starting quarterback for the remainder of the season.

By David Bonilla

Could quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo return to the San Francisco 49ers in 2023? No one thought it was possible he would be on the roster for Week 1 of this season, so it's impossible to say anything with certainty about next season. "A few months after the team and Garoppolo amicably decided to move on, only to get back together again in a wild sequence of events that led to him being their starting QB once again, both sides are open to him being back for the 2023 season, sources say," wrote NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. Those "wild sequence of events" were Garoppolo undergoing offseason shoulder surgery, plummeting the 49ers' chances of trading the quarterback,

The San Francisco 49ers knocked off the visiting Miami Dolphins 33-17 on Sunday, doing so with rookie quarterback Brock Purdy at the helm of the offense, not Jimmy Garoppolo. Garoppolo suffered a left foot injury on the team's first offensive drive and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. Head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters after the game, providing an update on his injured starting quarterback. Garoppolo suffered a broken foot and will undergo season-ending surgery. "Just hearing it, it was pretty crushing," Shanahan said. "We know what Jimmy's been through, how hard he's worked at this. I got the news in the second quarter, so it was a little different for me ... it was such a special win. But definitely mixed emotions hearing about

There was no shortage of topics to talk about from a 49ers perspective after Sunday's 33-17 win over the Miami Dolphins, and we're going to dive right into them in this edition of 49ers Notebook. While much of Sunday's postgame discussion dealt with the season-ending foot injury to quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo and the performance of Garoppolo's replacement, Brock Purdy, there were a number of other interesting and entertaining moments we're going to get into here, including some pointed (but friendly) words defensive end Nick Bosa had for head coach Kyle Shanahan and a bit of smack talk from wide receiver Deebo Samuel to former 49ers running back Raheem Mostert. Let's get it started... Thank S***-talking Kyle Shanahan for Nick Bosa's

The San Francisco 49ers are in the home stretch, with only six games remaining. After Sunday's victory over the New Orleans Saints, you'd think 49ers fans have nothing to worry about. But a handful of injuries, and some tough upcoming opponents, have given fans plenty of reasons to fret. We opened up our 49ers mailbag to see what was on the troubled minds of fans. Let's take a peek inside. What do you think is holding back these 49ers on offense? All The tools are there but lack the explosion on plays. - Will D. The 49ers have been inconsistent on offense. A week after exploding against the Cardinals, the offense struggled against the Saints. One reason is that the New Orleans defense is good. In fact, the Saints probably have the
