San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch announced two roster moves with three more to come before today's 1 p.m. PT deadline to reach the 80-player roster limit.

First, cornerback Jason Verrett will start the season on the reserve/physically-unable-to-perform (PUP) list. Second, rookie defensive tackle Kalia Davis will start on the reserve/non-football-injury (NFI) list. Davis is coming off an ACL injury suffered during his final season with UCF.

Lynch added that the 49ers are just being safe with Verrett, and there have been no setbacks in his recovery from the ACL injury he sustained during Week 1 of last season. The new PUP rules allow players to return after four weeks compared to the previous rule that forced them to sit for six weeks.

Verrett wasn't expected to be available for Week 1.

"We're not going to let him go until he's more than ready to go," head coach Kyle Shanahan said last week, "so we'll see how these next two weeks go. But it probably would surprise me [if he's ready] for Week 1."

In April, the 49ers made Davis a sixth-round draft pick. Verrett has been with San Francisco since 2019. He has landed on the injured reserve list in two of his three seasons with the 49ers. In May, the team re-signed Verrett to a one-year deal.

None of the upcoming roster moves will involve Jimmy Garoppolo. Lynch was asked if the 49ers need to do anything with the veteran quarterback before today's deadline.

"No, he's doing great," Lynch responded, per Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group.

Garoppolo was once again throwing on the side as San Francisco kicked off today's practice, the last of training camp.
