Where will Jimmy Garoppolo eventually land? Oddsmakers are trying to figure that out. The San Francisco 49ers quarterback is 31-14 since the trade from the New England Patriots in 2017. He was part of the 2019 squad that reached the Super Bowl. This past season, he helped guide the 49ers on an impressive playoff run that ended with the team's second NFC Championship Game appearance in three years.
The 49ers want to move on from Garoppolo, ushering in the Trey Lance era. Garoppolo has been recovering from the shoulder surgery he underwent on March 8. However, he started throwing weeks ago. On Wednesday, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the quarterback had been cleared to practice.
Where will Garoppolo end up? Bookies.com has developed projected odds for the 49ers quarterback's next NFL home.
- Cleveland Browns, +250, 28.6% implied probability
- New York Giants, +375, 21.1%
- Houston Texans, +400, 20.0%
- San Francisco 49ers, +800, 11.1%
- Seattle Seahawks, +1000, 9.1%
- No Team, +1000, 9.1%
While Cleveland owns the best odds, per the projections, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com recently reported that the Browns are not expected to pursue Garoppolo.
"The Browns are still not expected to pursue a trade for Jimmy Garoppolo even with the uncertainty over Deshaun Watson's suspension," Cabot wrote.
The Giants are a relatively new addition to the rumor mill, with some questioning the future of quarterback Daniel Jones.
Houston is reportedly sold on Davis Mills helming its offense. Texans insider John McClain recently stated, "They have no interest (in Garoppolo)."
It seems unlikely that San Francisco would hold onto Garoppolo, who counts $26.95 million against the salary cap in 2022, for the upcoming season with Lance slated to take over the starting job. Garoppolo would make an expensive backup quarterback. It also seems unlikely that the 49ers would trade Garoppolo inside the division to the Seattle Seahawks, who might be inclined to wait and see if he is released. Of course, San Francisco would get nothing in return if it releases Garoppolo and the quarterback signs with Seattle, so maybe the team should entertain a potential trade.
Cam Marino recently reported that at least five NFL teams have inquired with the 49ers about Garoppolo. They are the Atlanta Falcons, Texans, Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins.
