The Atlanta Falcons signed quarterback Marcus Mariota to a two-year deal on March 21. They may not be done transforming their quarterback room after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts, though. According to Falcons reporter Cam Marino, Atlanta is one of five known teams to inquire with the San Francisco 49ers about quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

The other teams, per Marino, are the Houston Texans, Seattle Seahawks, Detroit Lions, and Miami Dolphins.

On Wednesday, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reported that the Cleveland Browns are not expected to pursue Garoppolo.

In March, San Francisco gave Garoppolo's agents permission to seek a trade, and the quarterback was reportedly recently cleared to practice, over four months after he underwent shoulder surgery.

In addition to signing Mariota, the Falcons drafted Desmond Ridder out of Cincinnati in the third round of this year's draft. Garoppolo is available if Atlanta feels the 49ers quarterback is an upgrade. The Falcons are currently about $11.9 million under the salary cap. Garoppolo is set to earn a base salary of $24.2 million in 2022, the final year of his contract.

Garoppolo completed 68.3 percent of his passes in 2021 for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions before leading San Francisco on a postseason run that resulted in its second NFC Championship Game appearance in three seasons.
