49ers’ Jimmy G options dwindle: Browns trade Baker Mayfield to Panthers

The Cleveland Browns have agreed to trade quarterback Baker Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a 2024 conditional fifth-round pick, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. That's bad news for the San Francisco 49ers, who watch their options for Jimmy Garoppolo dwindle as yet another quarterback-needy team adds a veteran passer.

The Browns are also paying nearly $10.5 million of Mayfield's 2022 salary, while the Panthers are only on the hook for around $5 million, as Mayfield elected to trim $3.5 million of his salary for the trade, according to NFL Network's Mike Garofolo.

Mayfield, scorned by the Browns trading for Deshaun Watson in March, asked repeatedly to be traded, even with Deshaun Watson's status for the 2022 season in the air. With Mayfield's wish granted, Cleveland could be in the market for another quarterback with Watson's legal troubles continuing to mount, although, the team signed Jacoby Brissett in March and is intending to move forward with him in the likelihood that Watson receives a suspension.

Mayfield now joins a group of young quarterbacks in Sam Darnold and Matt Corral, immediately taking over as the top signal-caller on the depth chart as Carolina looks to rebound from their 5-12 record in 2021.

The Niners hoped to deal Garoppolo elsewhere ahead of the start of the new league year in March, but the quarterback underwent shoulder surgery, halting all trade talks, according to general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan.

While the 49ers have publicly stated that they are prepared to hold onto Garoppolo and his hefty salary during the 2022 season, few believe such a move is being seriously considered. With Garoppolo sidelined until early next month, second-year quarterback Trey Lance took the bulk of the first-team reps during the offseason program and is slated to be San Francisco's Week 1 starter.

"I expect [Garoppolo], at some time, most likely, to be traded," Shanahan said last month, "but who knows? That's not a guarantee, and it's been on hold [since] that happened."

What if Garoppolo is still on the roster at the start of training camp, assuming he is 100 percent healthy? Would the 49ers hold him out of practice?

"I'll think about that when that day comes," Shanahan responded on June 7. "But [if] Jimmy's under contract with us, and he's healthy, right now, I would see him coming to practice unless we traded him."

As of now, without a serious trade candidate available for Garoppolo's services, it remains to be seen what the 49ers do with their veteran quarterback.

Report: Browns will consider acquiring 49ers' Jimmy Garoppolo if Deshaun Watson's suspension increases

By David Bonilla

The Cleveland Browns have reportedly changed their tune. Depending on what happens with quarterback Deshaun Watson's suspension, the team will consider acquiring San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, per Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. "The Browns will consider acquiring Jimmy Garoppolo if Deshaun Watson's six-game suspension significantly increases upon appeal, league sources tell cleveland.com," wrote Cabot. It's worth noting that Cabot doesn't say the Browns are willing to trade for Garoppolo. That could mean Cleveland might wait to see if San Francisco releases its high-priced quarterback. Of course, her wording doesn't preclude the possibility of a trade. Cabot adds, "The Browns are awaiting the ruling of Peter C. Harvey, the

Rapoport: I don't get the sense the Browns are interested in 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo

We might quickly learn how much faith the Cleveland Browns have in quarterback Jacoby Brissett. Will they ride the 2022 season with the seventh-year quarterback, should the NFL force Deshaun Watson to sit out the season? Or will the Browns seek a different veteran quarterback? San Francisco 49ers fans are hoping for the latter. They're hoping for a miracle. Maybe, somehow, the Niners can get something in return for Jimmy Garoppolo and not be forced to release the former starter. The Browns might be the 49ers' last hope. San Francisco is waiting to see if any trade interest developers. So far, there has been nothing to report. Teams just aren't interested in the 30-year-old quarterback. NFL insider Ian Rapoport doesn't believe the Browns are too

John Lynch on Jimmy Garoppolo trade: 49ers will 'stay patient through this one'

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch spoke with reporters via a conference call on Tuesday. He did so from his office at the team facility, noting that he could see quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on the practice field from his window. "I'm watching him throw right now, and he looks pretty good," Lynch said. The general manager confirmed that Garoppolo is cleared to practice. However, both sides have "mutually" agreed that the best thing right now is to have the quarterback work on the side. Garoppolo doesn't have any restrictions, though. "Jimmy's doing a really good job, kind of building his stamina in the throwing program that was prescribed all along, and working out really strongly and aggressively," Lynch

Kyle Shanahan explains Jimmy Garoppolo's presence on 49ers-issued depth chart, isn't aware of trade interest

The San Francisco 49ers released an "unofficial" depth chart before today's practice. Head coach Kyle Shanahan shared that people probably shouldn't read too much into it because not much thought goes into it. The 49ers Communications staff compiles it, not the coaching staff, so Shanahan may not have even seen it. Jake Brendel is competing with Daniel Brunskill for the starting center job. So why is Brendel listed as the starter? "Because we had to put one there," Shanahan explained. One other position group stood out. With Lance solidified as the starting quarterback, the depth chart lists Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy behind him. Fourth on the list,
