Shanahan: Dee Ford to undergo physical this week, still unlikely to remain with 49ers; Danny Gray sidelined

Jun 7, 2022 at 1:19 PM--

Dee Ford will report to the San Francisco 49ers this week. However, he won't be participating in the team's three-day mandatory minicamp. It sounds like the 49ers still plan to part ways with the veteran defensive end.

"He's going to come in. He's been excused from minicamp," head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday. "I think he's coming in to get his physical later this week. But no, he's not doing anything with us."

The coach was asked if the physical is a precursor to the 49ers releasing Ford or possibly retirement.

"I know we've gotten a good bill of health from his doctors, saying how good he is in this spot," Shanahan said. "We're going to check him out with our physical. I do not expect him to be on our team. But those are the [two] options that could happen."

Back issues limited Ford last season. The pass rusher appeared in just six games before landing on injured reserve. He played in just one game in 2020. Ford has recorded 9.5 sacks in his three injury-plagued seasons with the 49ers.

Shanahan added that rookie wide receiver Danny Gray is not practicing due to a hamstring injury sustained during organized team activities last week.

"That's why he's out this week, and will most likely be out next week," Shanahan said.

The San Francisco 49ers managed to overcome the loss of their starting quarterback, Trey Lance, in Sunday's 27-7 victory over the Seattle Seahawks. Jimmy Garoppolo, who was re-signed to a restructured one-year deal before the start of the season, replaced the second-year quarterback. The early news coming out of Santa Clara on Lance's status hasn't been good. The quarterback was ruled out due to an ankle injury. The news got worse when ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Lance is expected to undergo surgery, likely ending his 2022

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 2 contest against the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. The 49ers hope to get their All-Pro tight end, George Kittle, back in time for Sunday's game. Kittle suffered a groin strain last week and missed the Week 1 contest against the Chicago Bears. "He's made progress, so hopefully, we'll have better luck this week," head coach Kyle Shanahan said before practice. Offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill continues to miss practices after suffering a setback with his hamstring injury last week. "We were thinking he'd be ready for Week 1, and he had that setback," Shanahan said. "So he'll be later in this week, but I'm not sure yet. [His chances of playing

Kyle Shanahan expects Jeff Wilson, 49ers' rookie RBs to step up with Elijah Mitchell sidelined

It was a tough break for San Francisco 49ers running back Elijah Mitchell. After dealing with an injury-plagued rookie campaign in 2021, the second-year player suffered an MCL sprain against the Chicago Bears last weekend. Mitchell was lucky that was all the injury was. The way he got hurt, some feared the worst. It wasn't season-ending, but Mitchell will still miss about two months. As one might expect, the injury was emotional for Mitchell. He was eager to put his injuries behind him and prove his worth in 2022. "He was ready to go," head coach Kyle Shanahan shared with NBC Sports Bay Area this week. "Everyone could see that early in the game. I mean, if he would have stayed in that game and stayed healthy, I wouldn't have put 200 yards out of the

There could be a lot of slipping and sliding at Soldier Field today. The San Francisco 49ers are nearly set to kick off against the Chicago Bears on a rain-soaked field. Fullback Kyle Juszczyk has the right mindset, though. He pumped up his teammates to have a little fun before he and wide receiver Deebo Samuel led them onto the field. "Think about when you're a little kid, outside playing in the rain," Juszczyk told his teammates. "... Let's enjoy it. Let's be physical as s--t. Come on, let's go."
