Tannenbaum: Keep an eye on this potential draft-day trade for 49ers’ Deebo Samuel

On Wednesday, Rich Eisen suggested that the New York Jets offer the No. 10 overall pick for disgruntled San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel. NFL executive turned ESPN analyst Mike Tannenbaum sees that as a real possibility. Although, if it happens, he expects the exchange to occur during the first day of the draft, with the Jets on the clock.

Samuel has reportedly requested a trade. NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported that his do-everything role in 2021—ironically, what has made him so valuable—is part of the reason he wants a divorce from the team that made him a second-round pick in 2019.

The 49ers want to keep Samuel. Connor Hughes, a New York Jets reporter for The Athletic, says San Francisco has "zero intention" of trading their fourth-year wide receiver. Would the No. 10 overall pick plus potentially more be enough to change their minds? Possibly.

"[The Jets] could reach an agreement in principle with the agent of Deebo Samuel and simply, if the 49ers like a player, let's say at the 10th pick, they can literally make the trade on the clock," Tannenbaum said on ESPN's Get Up. "... If I'm San Francisco, and I can't solve Deebo Samuel's contract situation, and there's a player I love at 10, this could be the best opportunity for them.

"So there will be incredible drama as the top 10 unfolds next Thursday night, assuming nothing happens between now and then."

The 49ers are scheduled to hold their annual pre-draft media session on Monday. San Francisco does not currently own a first-round pick. The team's first selection comes at No. 61 overall in the second round.

Amidst swirling trade rumors surrounding Brandon Aiyuk, the speculation surrounding Deebo Samuel's future with the San Francisco 49ers seems to have quieted down. According to Michael Silver of the San Francisco Chronicle, the 49ers have assured Samuel that he will not be involved in any pre- or post-draft transactions, ensuring his place on the roster for the time being. "Samuel, who signed a three-year, $71.55 million extension before the 2022 season, has been assured by his bosses that he will not be dealt during or after the draft," Silver reported, citing a source familiar with the discussions. By Al Sacco

With the 2024 NFL Draft less than a week away, it's common for the rumor mill to start churning, especially with players who are actively seeking a new contract. It was just two short years ago that WR Deebo Samuel requested a trade from the San Francisco 49ers prior to draft day, only for cooler heads to prevail and eventually agree to a new deal. Now, it's WR Brandon Aiyuk's turn to try and get paid and rumors surfaced over the weekend that he too would request to be dealt. While that report was quickly shot down by his agent, there's still a lot of discussion about Aiyuk's future and if other teams will come calling on draft night.
