Joe Staley: Timing of 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo’s surgery may be meant to diminish trade value

Former San Francisco 49ers tackle Joe Staley said two noteworthy things during his conversation with KNBR on Wednesday. The first was that he's very excited to see 49ers-nemesis Russell Wilson leave the NFC West, feeling that the former Seattle Seahawks quarterback won't find much success with the Denver Broncos.

"I'm not a huge Russell Wilson believer," Staley admitted on the Papa & Lund show. "I know I've heard a lot of people that put him up at the top tier echelon of quarterbacks in the NFL over the last decade, but I think a lot of success, even if you go back to the year that they were dominating us, it was more that defense."

Staley doesn't feel Wilson will have the weapons around him in Denver to be successful, and now the team lacks a good amount of their draft capital thanks to the trade to acquire the quarterback.

Staley added, "I don't think he's going to be the huge difference-maker that everybody thinks that he's going to be."

But you're not here to read about Staley's opinion of Wilson. The former offensive lineman also discussed his former teammate, quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo.

Everyone expects San Francisco to trade Garoppolo in the coming weeks, and Staley admits that doing so and transitioning to Trey Lance is probably the right move for the team. Garoppolo underwent shoulder surgery this week, and many feel that has diminished his trade value—or at least raised some concern for interested teams.

Staley wonders if that was the plan.

"I think Jimmy is playing, right now, a little bit of the business game," Staley said after admitting that he has not heard a lot about Garoppolo from his former team, so he doesn't have any insider info. "They drafted a quarterback last year, third overall. I know Jimmy is a great guy, didn't make anything public, and is not going to split the team in any way or any capacity, but it probably felt a certain way to him that they would draft a guy to take over his role.

"So I think he's a little bit upset with that business aspect of it, and I think the timing of his surgery, right now, is a little bit of the business aspect to it, saying, 'All right, you're going to try to trade me? Well, I don't want to get traded, so I'm going to try to maybe diminish my trade value a little bit with this timing of this shoulder surgery.'"

However, Staley doesn't feel holding onto Garoppolo would be the correct move. Instead, the 49ers have to get something of value for the quarterback while they can. That will allow the team to keep its own young stars while adding more talent around Lance.

What's fair market value for 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk?

By David Bonilla
19 hrs

The recent news of the Detroit Lions agreeing to a four-year, $120 million extension for wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, with $77 million guaranteed, likely piques the interest of wideout Brandon Aiyuk, who eagerly awaits his own contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers. With St. Brown's annual salary now hovering around $30 million and Philadelphia Eagles receiver DeVonta Smith's recent deal averaging about $25 million with $51 million guaranteed, Aiyuk's agent, Ryan Williams, will likely leverage these figures in discussions with the 49ers. 49ers Webzone editor Brian Renick, also a host of the "No Huddle Podcast," recently speculated that Aiyuk's contract could fall between those of St. Brown and Smith. He suggests a ballpark figure of $27-$28 million

A questionable rumor surfaced on Wednesday regarding the Pittsburgh Steelers' interest in San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein reported that the AFC team was seemingly confident they could pull off a trade for Aiyuk. However, the credibility of this report comes into question due to the assertion that the Steelers believe they could acquire Aiyuk at a bargain price, possibly in exchange for a second-round draft pick and a late-round selection. Why one analyst is worried for Brock Purdy if 49ers trade Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy achieved a remarkable feat in 2023, setting a single-season franchise record with 4,280 passing yards. This accomplishment is noteworthy, considering the illustrious quarterbacks who have graced the organization's history. A significant portion of those yards came from wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk, who amassed a career-high and team-leading 1,342 receiving yards. Most of his 75 catches originated from passes thrown by Purdy. Amidst significant offseason chatter surrounding the 49ers' star receiver, including several unsubstantiated trade rumors, Aiyuk's future remains uncertain. Former NFL player James Jones, now an analyst, expressed concern for Purdy should Aiyuk's tenure in the Bay Area come to an end. "I

7-round mock draft: 49ers trade up to fortify secondary

By David Bonilla
Apr 19

The San Francisco 49ers first selection in next week's draft comes at No. 31 overall. However, NFL Media analyst Chad Reuter doesn't have the Bay Area team remaining at that spot in the first round. In his seven-round mock draft, he envisions the 49ers striking a deal with the Green Bay Packers to move up six spots to No. 25 overall, where they select former Alabama cornerback Kool-Aid McKinstry. Reuter notes, "Whether it's for a cornerback like McKinstry, an offensive lineman or a receiver, the 49ers could very well give up a mid-round pick to acquire one of the few missing pieces on an otherwise potent roster." The rest of the mock draft reveals at least part of the
