The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 18 contest against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

Jimmy Garoppolo returned to practice for the first time since suffering his thumb injury against the Tennessee Titans on December 23. Although, the quarterback was limited.

"We'll put Jimmy in on what he feels comfortable doing with where he's at today," Shanahan said. "Trey will get the rest. I'm sure Trey will get the majority, but we'll see how it is when [they are] out there. Mainly just communicating with them throughout the practice, through the individuals, through everything. Today won't be a full-speed practice, so it's not as challenging."

Garoppolo admitted that throwing the football is painful. He had an opportunity to throw on Tuesday to feel what it is like.

"F--k, it hurts," Garoppolo told reporters. "I don't know how else to describe it. It feels like the web in your hand is kind of tearing a little bit. That's probably the best way I can describe it."

While Trent Williams did not practice, Shanahan is optimistic the offensive tackle will play on Sunday.

"I know [his elbow is] hurting too much to go today," Shanahan said. "... I know this is a big game and if Trent can be out there, he'll be out there. I don't think he's looking at it in any other way right now."

Shanahan also didn't sound too concerned about the 49ers' leading rusher, rookie running back Elijah Mitchell.

"He still has the same stuff he's had the last few weeks," Shanahan said, "so that's why he's not going today. I think we're listing knee as the injury."

Below are Wednesday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Rams, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.

If the 49ers draft a wide receiver, don't expect it to be a smaller guy

By Marc Adams
Apr 13

The San Francisco 49ers are in good shape for 2024 when it comes to the wide receiver position. What that room looks like after this coming season remains to be seen. Most believe the 49ers will give Brandon Aiyuk a new contract around the start of training camp. But there are no guarantees. As it was reported on Friday, Aiyuk unfollowed the 49ers on Instagram, much like Deebo Samuel did two years ago. It seems to be how modern-day players negotiate. It's not necessarily anything to be concerned about, but you never truly know how these things will end. There is still potential that the 49ers could trade the star receiver in the next couple of weeks. If Aiyuk is extended, it

Brandon Aiyuk's agent denies report of Steelers 'aggressively pursuing' the 49ers receiver

By David Bonilla

On Wednesday, Chat Sports contributor Chase Senior reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers were "aggressively pursuing" San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. He further stated that the Steelers are confident they can finalize a deal for the star player. REPORTS: The Pittsburgh Steelers are aggressively pursuing a Brandon Aiyuk trade and the Steelers would be "surprised" if they don't land Aiyuk. Of note: Pittsburgh has the 20th overall pick.
