49ers-Texans: Jimmy Garoppolo not expected to play, Elijah Mitchell likely to play, says Schefter

Jan 1, 2022 at 9:52 PM--

ESPN's Adam Schefter offered two updates leading to the San Francisco 49ers' Week 17 contest against the Houston Texans. First, starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo is not expected to play on Sunday but could return for the team's regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams on January 9.

The other update is that rookie running back Elijah Mitchell, the team's leading rusher, is expected to play.

Garoppolo did not practice this week after suffering a torn ligament and chipped bone in his right thumb during the 49ers' Week 16 loss to the Tennessee Titans. Mitchell has been dealing with a knee injury and has not played since Week 13.

"[Thursday], I thought, was [Mitchell's] best day [of practice] that he's had, for a Thursday," head coach Kyle Shanahan said on Friday. "That's the only day we're going full speed, and he was able to get more reps than he has since this has happened to him. So, I think that's very encouraging, especially when he does that."

Rookie Trey Lance will start against the Texans if Garoppolo doesn't play. It will be his first start and significant playing time since Week 5.

"I think guys believe in Trey," Shanahan said. "I think guys expect him to go out there and play well. By no means, like everyone, is he going to play perfect. But I think that guys, they got to see him Arizona week, they got to see him this week, in terms of how he handles himself.

"And I think that it's even stronger this week. He knows how to handle the part. He knows how to get in the huddle. He takes command. His preparation is very impressive, and I think that gives the guys a lot of confidence in him."

Nate Sudfeld, who was activated from the practice squad this week, would serve as Lance's backup if Garoppolo doesn't play.

The biggest San Francisco 49ers-related storyline heading into the offseason was the quarterback situation. The team looked to transition from its starter of the past four-and-a-half seasons, Jimmy Garoppolo, to second-year quarterback Trey Lance, last year's No. 3 overall pick. Deebo Samuel stole many of the offseason headlines after requesting to be traded. Still, the quarterback situation remains one of the more significant storylines heading into the 2022 season. San Francisco expected to trade Garoppolo in March, before the start of the new league year. However, Garoppolo undergoing offseason shoulder surgery halted all talks with other teams. Now, the market has seemingly dried up, so it will be interesting to see what the 49ers do as training camp nears

Earlier this week, CBS Sports compiled a list of every NFL team's most questionable offseason move, and pointed to the Jimmy Garoppolo saga for the San Francisco 49ers, which still remains unanswered as mandatory minicamp has concluded. While there were several potential choices, such as San Francisco's contract negotiations with Deebo Samuel that ultimately resulted in a trade request by the fourth-year receiver, CBS Sports's Jordan Dajani believed that the outcome of the Garoppolo situation was the most questionable move. "We could discuss something related to Deebo Samuel here, but it seems

After being subject to a number of trade rumors this offseason, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo remains a member of the organization, although the franchise has made it clear that they've attempted to move on from the veteran signal-caller. One of the reasons that San Francisco could be looking to move on is due to Garoppolo's inability to consistently complete deep passes, which has hindered the 49ers on several occasions, most notably during the 49ers' Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2019 NFL season. Earlier this week, PFF ranked the 2021 starting quarterbacks' deep passing by various

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have said they expect their veteran quarterback, Jimmy Garoppolo, to be healthy enough to begin throwing again in early July. According to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, that timeline remains intact. San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains on schedule in his recovery from shoulder surgery and timetable for throwing, per source. The expectation has been Garoppolo will throw over next few weeks (early July, per Kyle Shanahan) and that plan is still in place.— Jeremy Fowler (@JFowlerESPN)
