The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 17 contest against the Houston Texans on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo had hoped to test his injured thumb during practice, but walked off the field before the Wednesday session started, per multiple reports.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan had hoped his veteran passer would get some work in and be available for this weekend's game.

"If he can do some, he will be limited today," Shanahan said before practice. "If not, he won't practice, and he'll try again tomorrow."

Now, we'll have to wait until Thursday to see if Garoppolo can manage to get in some throws. Garoppolo suffered an ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) tear and a chipped bone in his right thumb during last Thursday night's loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Shanahan sounded confident that rookie running back Trey Sermon, who is still on injured reserve, would be activated before Sunday's game. The team's other rookie running back and leading rusher, Elijah Mitchell, was limited.

Below are Wednesday's practice participation reports for both the 49ers and Texans, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff.

According to Sports Illustrated contributor Noah Strackbein, who writes for "All Steelers" on the network, there's a level of confidence within the Pittsburgh Steelers organization that they can strike a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk—and at a bargain rate. "According to a team source, the Steelers and 49ers trade talks are real," Strackbein wrote. "While nothing is imminent, they 'would be surprised if it didn't happen.' But it all comes down to compensation, and Pittsburgh isn't willing to budge much on price." While it seems unlikely that the 49ers would part ways with Aiyuk for anything less than a first-round draft
