San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is on track to be activated from injured reserve after having his practice window opened last week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes Greenlaw and defensive end Dee Ford can be activated in time for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. That's the plan, for now.

Ford did not practice during Wednesday's session but is expected to do so on Thursday. He's been on injured reserve since November 6 due to a back injury. Greenlaw underwent core muscle surgery and has been on injured reserve since September 18.

"Greenlaw did a good job out there today," Shanahan said during KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "He'll go meet with the trainers now and tell them how it felt and stuff. Dee, we don't want to put him [out there] three days in a row, just because of how he's been since he's been here. So, we're waiting until tomorrow to start to practice him.

"So, tomorrow's a big practice. I know he's feeling great, from what he said, so he's just got to go out there and show it to us. Hopefully, we'll have both of them up on Sunday."

The potential reinforcements on defense mean the team is starting to have better luck getting healthy. Having won three of the last four games, the 5-5 49ers might be ramping up for a run at a playoff berth.

"The league's hard," Shanahan said. "And when you're missing a couple of your best guys, it doesn't mean you have no chance to win at all, but it affects a couple of plays in that game. And you never know what plays it's going to affect and what road it can send your team down.

"The more good guys you have out there—and it's not just being out there. It's them playing at the top of their game. I know [our] guys have been battling throughout the year to try to stay healthy and get out there consistently, and I feel they're starting to get back to who they are, and that gives them a chance to get better."

By Rohan Chakravarthi

The San Francisco 49ers have rolled through three weeks, dominating with a point differential of 92-42, leading to an early 3-0 record, which only two other NFL teams have thus far. However, all hasn't been well, as linebacker Dre Greenlaw has been flagged twice for 15-yard penalties in back-to-back weeks, which has been an issue at times during his career. Both calls have been seen as controversial, leading reporters to ask head coach Kyle Shanahan about his linebacker's aggressive tendencies, which he wasn't fazed

49ers vs. Cardinals Injury Report: Deebo Samuel misses another practice; Dre Greenlaw returns

By David Bonilla
Sep 28

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 4 contest against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Deebo Samuel continues to rack up the absences. For the third time this week, the wide receiver missed practice. He did not participate in Monday's bonus practice or Wednesday's session. Samuel was on the field for the team's walk-through on Thursday but left for the weight room once his teammates started stretching in preparation for practice. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw returned to practice for the first time this week after missing time due to an ankle injury. Wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk (shoulder) shed his blue no-contact jersey, a sign that he could be nearing a return after being among the 49ers' inactives last

Are 49ers LB Dre Greenlaw's penalties getting out of hand?

By Rohan Chakravarthi
Sep 24

The San Francisco 49ers comfortably won their third straight game to begin the regular season, defeating the New York Giants 30-12 to improve to 3-0. However, for the second consecutive week, linebacker Dre Greenlaw committed a 15-yard penalty that cost the team, which was an issue at times last season due to the aggressiveness of his play. Greenlaw enjoyed a breakout season in 2022 after signing a well-earned 2-year contract extension and cemented himself as the No. 2 linebacker next to Fred Warner. But, after two straight weeks with 15-yard flags, are Greenlaw's penalties getting out of hand? Head coach Kyle Shanahan provided his take on the matter, valuing Greenlaw's aggressiveness, while also pointing out the close nature of both

What if the 49ers haven't had a good game yet?

By JD Salazar

Through three weeks, the San Francisco 49ers have scored 30 points per game and held their opponents to just 14 per game. They rank at or near the top of effectiveness metrics in all three phases of the game. Simply put, they're crushing the NFL underfoot, and not making it look particularly difficult. It's still only been three weeks, and there's a long season ahead of the 49ers. For a team performing at such a level that they're lapping their opponents, it's not difficult to make an argument that this smooth sailing isn't going to last forever. No one expects even the best teams to make it through the regular season undefeated, and the Niners will undoubtedly face their share of adversity this year. But even understanding that, it's also pretty easy to
