49ers’ Kyle Shanahan: Dre Greenlaw had a good practice, Dee Ford ‘feeling great’

Nov 24, 2021 at 3:47 PM--

San Francisco 49ers linebacker Dre Greenlaw is on track to be activated from injured reserve after having his practice window opened last week. Head coach Kyle Shanahan hopes Greenlaw and defensive end Dee Ford can be activated in time for Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. That's the plan, for now.

Ford did not practice during Wednesday's session but is expected to do so on Thursday. He's been on injured reserve since November 6 due to a back injury. Greenlaw underwent core muscle surgery and has been on injured reserve since September 18.

"Greenlaw did a good job out there today," Shanahan said during KNBR's Tolbert, Krueger & Brooks show. "He'll go meet with the trainers now and tell them how it felt and stuff. Dee, we don't want to put him [out there] three days in a row, just because of how he's been since he's been here. So, we're waiting until tomorrow to start to practice him.

"So, tomorrow's a big practice. I know he's feeling great, from what he said, so he's just got to go out there and show it to us. Hopefully, we'll have both of them up on Sunday."

The potential reinforcements on defense mean the team is starting to have better luck getting healthy. Having won three of the last four games, the 5-5 49ers might be ramping up for a run at a playoff berth.

"The league's hard," Shanahan said. "And when you're missing a couple of your best guys, it doesn't mean you have no chance to win at all, but it affects a couple of plays in that game. And you never know what plays it's going to affect and what road it can send your team down.

"The more good guys you have out there—and it's not just being out there. It's them playing at the top of their game. I know [our] guys have been battling throughout the year to try to stay healthy and get out there consistently, and I feel they're starting to get back to who they are, and that gives them a chance to get better."

By David Bonilla

Dre Greenlaw underwent a minor procedure after last season on his finger. The San Francisco 49ers linebacker is still working his way through the recovery process. That's why he's not with his teammates during organized team activities (OTAs). "Yeah, nothing major," Greenlaw said Thursday on KNBR's Papa & Lund show. "Just a little clean up in the thumb. [It] was giving me some problems, just whenever I was punching at the ball or whenever I had to use my hands on O-linemen. [My] finger was just really jammed up, so I just had to get it cleaned up and fixed. "It's going really well right now, so I'm just waiting, I guess. Now, I think they're going to keep me out of OTAs for the most part, just because you don't want any setbacks right now. But it's

Christian McCaffrey calls Kyle Shanahan's 49ers scheme the "most sustainable" in the NFL

You've heard stories about San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan installing a play and breaking down exactly how he expects the defense to react. Then, when the players execute the play, everything occurs as the coach explained, as if he had a crystal ball to predict the outcome. Shanahan is a confident play-caller, emphasizing execution by his players to ensure everything goes as planned. The 49ers acquired a big-time playmaker last season, trading for star running back Christian McCaffrey, who had already established himself as one of the most versatile players in the league. Even McCaffrey marvels at the things his play-caller comes up

Arik Armstead: 49ers can repeat as NFC West champs; Trey Lance has a bright future

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers defensive lineman Arik Armstead joined NFL Network's Good Morning Football on Thursday to discuss the state of the team at the start of organized team activities (OTAs). Armstead is part of a defensive line that includes NFL Defensive Player of the Year Nick Bosa and added former Philadelphia Eagles defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. The question that had to be asked: Does San Francisco own the best defensive line in football? "Well, on paper, I guess you could say that, but 'on paper' doesn't win any game," Armstead responded. "But we're excited about getting together and starting that journey of

49ers insider offers analysis from glimpse of Trey Lance and Sam Darnold

It's premature to draw conclusions about a quarterback based on practices in May. That is especially true when you do so based on one practice. The San Francisco 49ers started organized team activities (OTAs) this week, and all eyes were on Trey Lance and Sam Darnold. The two players are battling for that QB2 job behind last season's rookie sensation, Brock Purdy. One could even start Week 1 if Purdy is not healthy enough to do so himself. Lance is coming off a season-ending ankle injury but looks completely healthy now. Darnold is trying to turn his career around after never living up to his high draft status. Matt Barrows of The Athletic was on hand for Tuesday's practice, the only one open to reporters so far, and one that Barrows describes as a
