49ers-Bears Injury Report: Trent Williams questionable, Trey Lance good to go; Khalil Mack out

Oct 29, 2021 at 1:41 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are preparing for their Week 8 contest against the Chicago Bears on Sunday at Soldier Field in Chicago, Illinois.

Trent Williams returned to practice today. The offensive tackle is returning from an ankle injury initially sustained in Week 5, and the tweaked last week.

"This has been the big test, to get him to Friday," head coach Kyle Shanahan said this morning on KNBR.

If Williams passed the test, he could be active on Sunday. The offensive lineman was listed as "questionable" for the upcoming game.

Quarterback Trey Lance has been practicing all week, albeit limited. Shanahan said Lance is set to be Jimmy Garoppolo's backup on Sunday. The rookie did not appear on this week's game status report.

Linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair and defensive ends Dee Ford and Samson Ebukam weren't seen practicing. The former two sustained concussions on Sunday night while the latter "rolled his ankle pretty good" on Thursday, per Shanahan.

As expected, Chicago will be without Khalil Mack, the three-time first-team All-Pro and six-time Pro Bowl pass rusher.

Below are the official injury reports for the 49ers and Bears, which were provided by the 49ers Communications staff. Also included are Friday's practice participation reports.

Trent Williams, Brandon Aiyuk expect 49ers to be better with Trey Lance at QB

By David Bonilla
Aug 2

The San Francisco 49ers expect things to be different with Trey Lance under center. The second-year quarterback takes the reins from Jimmy Garoppolo, who the team still hopes to trade. While Lance is inexperienced, many believe he has a high ceiling and can be the type of dual-threat player that gives opposing defenses headaches. "He's giving everybody confidence," tackle Trent Williams told NFL Network's Steve Mariucci and Michael Yam after Tuesday's practice. "He's giving everybody confidence in his ability and his poise, the way he commands the huddle. I say all the time that I'm impressed that he [doesn't] make the same mistake twice, and I think, from a young quarterback, that's all you can ask for because they're going to make mistakes, and that's part of the learning

Trent Williams: Trey Lance gives 49ers two offenses merged into one

Trey Lance has had an uneven training camp as the young San Francisco 49ers quarterback navigates the ups and downs of his first offseason as a starting quarterback. However, his Tuesday practice may have been his best so far, bouncing back from a poor Sunday outing. "[T]he second-year quarterback had a strong performance, mainly showcasing poise and accuracy while moving the offense downfield with throws to all facets of the field," wrote Rohan Chakravarthi. The expectation is that Lance, a quarterback with the potential to thrive as a passer and runner, will elevate the 49ers offense to a level that will give opposing defenses headaches. Veteran

Trent Williams explains how Deebo Samuel inspires teammates, why 49ers will be good 'for a long time'

Trent Williams spoke with reporters after Monday's training camp practice. With his San Francisco 49ers teammate, Deebo Samuel, having recently signed a massive contract extension, the conversation naturally included questions about the star wide receiver. Before practice, head coach Kyle Shanahan praised Samuel's influence on the team. "My favorite thing about Deebo is how much he inspires people," Shanahan told reporters. "And he inspires me more than almost any player I've watched on the field, the way he runs the ball, whether you're handing it to him, whether you're throwing it to him, whether he's catching it on a kick. And these aren't things you

49ers Notebook: Trey Lance assesses first two practices; Ryans praises Lance, Nick Bosa; Richard Sherman predicts 49ers DBs will be 'among the best'

Following the 49ers' practice session on Thursday, quarterback Trey Lance spoke publicly for the first time since June while defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans chatted with reporters about what he's seen so far from his side of the ball -- and from the quarterback his defense has been facing. Lance spoke on a number of topics, including what he thought of his first two days of training camp as the team's starter. Ryans offered his views of Lance, as well as what he's seen from some of the key players in the secondary and on the defensive line. Plus, there was an interesting Twitter quote Thursday from former 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman, who expects to see big things from his former defensive teammates this season.
