Jason Verrett pushes for Melvin Ingram to join 49ers

Jun 22, 2021 at 2:13 PM--

Jason Verrett wouldn't mind a reunion with former Los Angeles Chargers defensive end Melvin Ingram. The San Francisco 49ers cornerback responded to a tweet from the official NFL account asking fans to name a defense that should add the three-time Pro Bowl defender (h/t to Dalton Johnson of NBC Sports).

Verrett and Ingram were teammates for five years (2014-18). Verrett left the Chargers after 2018 and signed with San Francisco. Ingram remained in Los Angeles through last season.

The Chargers drafted Ingram (6-2, 247) out of South Carolina with the No. 18 overall pick in 2012. He registered 10 tackles, five quarterback hits, two passes defensed, and an interception through seven games last season.

49ers defensive end Jordan Willis was recently suspended for six games for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances, so the team may look into its options to maintain depth.

Ingram, 32, has recorded 360 tackles, 70 tackles for a loss, 108 quarterback hits, 49 sacks, 29 passes defensed, three interceptions, and 13 forced fumbles through his nine NFL seasons. Last season was his first without a sack. The defender earned his Pro Bowl selections during each season between 2017 and 2019.

By David Bonilla

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa briefly paused during a long response to a reporter's question after practice on Thursday. "It's tough with this mask," he said before continuing with his answer. Bosa and cornerback Jason Verrett wore masks while speaking with reporters, quickly indicating that both are among the less than 10 percent of 49ers players who remain unvaccinated. Protocols demand that they wear masks while at the team's facilities — except during practices. If neither gets vaccinated, they will be limited by several league-imposed restrictions this season and have to undergo more frequent COVID testing. "I'm just

Jason Verrett compares Brandon Aiyuk to future Hall of Famer, feels 49ers offense can be 'dominant'

Comparisons are fun. Entering last year's draft, NFL.com analyst Lance Zierlein compared wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk to Robert Woods of the Los Angeles Rams. Aiyuk ended up becoming a first-round selection of the San Francisco 49ers and had an impressive rookie campaign. Cornerback Jason Verrett offered up another comparison while speaking to the media on Thursday, saying Aiyuk displays traits that remind him of a future Hall of Famer. "We kind of can see similarities with BA, as far as the skillset, of Julio (Jones)," Verrett shared. "You can kind of see some similarities." That is high praise for the second-year receiver. 2019 49ers vs. 2021 49ers, Part 1 (Offense)

How well do the 2021 49ers stack up to the 2019 team? Lately I have listened to some podcasts and read some tweets comparing the current San Francisco 49ers team (2021) to the 2019 team that fell just short of winning the Super Bowl. I find the comparison interesting. And since many people quickly assume the 2021 49ers are not as good as the 2019 team, I wanted to take a look for myself. So as we prepare for the team to report on Tuesday, let's compare the two teams, position by position. For the purpose of this very scientific experiment, we will assume everyone is healthy (even though that never happens). Let's start on offense. The defensive comparison is coming soon.
