49ers open as 7-point Week 1 road favorite vs. Lions

May 12, 2021 at 8:55 AM--

The entire opening week of the NFL's 2021 schedule has been revealed, and the San Francisco 49ers will head on the road to face the Detroit Lions. BetMGM is already listing the Niners as seven-point favorites against the Lions.

No other team is favored by more in its Week 1 matchup. Only the Los Angeles Rams are also favored by seven points in their matchup against the Chicago Bears.

I have set up a 2021 Schedule Tracker to report leaked matchups leading to tonight's complete 272-game NFL schedule reveal. As of this post, the only other confirmed 49ers matchup is a Week 2 road game against the Philadelphia Eagles. That means San Francisco will open the season with back-to-back road games, which last occurred in 2019.

There are other rumored and unconfirmed matchups listed within the tracker, though.

The 2021 matchup between San Francisco and Detroit marks the fifth time the two teams have opened the regular season against one another. The 49ers will face a familiar foe in former Rams quarterback Jared Goff, who was traded to the Lions this offseason. Former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford is now with the Rams.

The 49ers are 38-28-1 all-time against the Lions. San Francisco's last meeting against Detroit came in 2018 and resulted in a 30-27 win. The team's last road meeting against the Lions was a 32-17 loss in 2015.

49ers' Kyle Shanahan on Julio Jones to Titans trade: "My second-favorite choice is him being in the AFC"

By David Bonilla
Jun 6, 2021

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is at the Sonoma Raceway today. He is the Grand Marshal of the Toyota/Save Mart 350 NASCAR Cup Series race and caught up with reporters following the news of the Atlanta Falcons trading wide receiver Julio Jones to the Tennessee Titans. The 49ers were likely interested, and there was a lot of speculation surrounding the potential of a Jones-Shanahan reunion. The coach worked with Jones for two seasons (2015-16) when he was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta. Shanahan was asked about the trade. "I'm very glad he's in the AFC," he responded. One reporter said it would have been nice to have

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle joined Good Morning Football today and was asked about his new quarterback, rookie Trey Lance. The team concluded its offseason program last week, and won't hit the practice field again until the end of July. In April, the Niners traded a haul of future picks to move up to the No. 3 overall spot to select Lance. After finally being able to haul in some passes from the quarterback, Kittle has been impressed by the 21-year-old. 49ers to stay on the East Coast between Lions, Eagles games

Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers plan to stay on the East Coast between Weeks 1 and 2 of the upcoming season. The team is scheduled to open the season in Detroit against the Lions and then travel to Philadelphia to play the Eagles. "The players, coaches and some other staff members will remain on the East Coast between their first two games of the season, a source told NBC Sports Bay Area," wrote Maiocco. Last season, the team stayed at The Greenbrier in West Virginia between Week 2 and 3 matchups against the New York Jets and New York Giants. The 49ers won both games. San

Window is open for Trey Lance to win 49ers QB job, but it won't be easy, says Shanahan

Trey Lance won't be automatically relegated to a backup role at quarterback this season just because he's a rookie, but he'll have his work cut out for him if he wants to prove he should be the starter over Jimmy Garoppolo. The widespread assumption is that the veteran Garoppolo will start for the 49ers this season while the first-round pick Lance learns from the sidelines. But 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan won't be approaching the situation from that perspective once training camp gets underway in late July, at least not initially. Shanahan spoke about that and a number of other topics during a conversation with Tim Kawakami of The Athletic on the most recent episode of Kawakami's TK Show
