Rich Eisen tried to get Trey Lance to leak info about the 49ers’ draft interest

Apr 27, 2021 at 8:08 PM--

Trey Lance will hear his name called on Thursday night. San Francisco 49ers fans are eager to know if their favorite team will call the quarterback's name. Rich Eisen is also very interested to know where Lance is headed and grilled the former Bison about his interactions with the Niners.

"How are your Zooms with the 49ers, Trey?" Eisen came out and asked the quarterback during The Rich Eisen Show.

"I actually ... um," Lance said before pausing, as if he were carefully choosing his next words.

"They've been going well," he continued. "I haven't had any more with them than I've had with any other team. But definitely looking forward to [the draft], like said, finding out where I'm going to be. I wish I knew, just as much as you do. Probably more. But I really don't know where I'm going to end up at. So, hopefully, Thursday, we'll find out."

Eisen asked how many conversations Lance has had with San Francisco since the team traded up to the No. 3 spot on March 26.

"Just a couple of phone calls, really, has been the most," Lance responded. "I don't even know if I've had a Zoom with them in the last four weeks, honestly. Maybe one Zoom with them. But other than that, it's just been phone calls, and not like it's an everyday thing or anything like that. Just their regular housekeeping, making sure they've got my contact info, things like that."

Eisen laughed. Yes, definitely make sure that contact information is correct, 49ers. You may need it on Thursday night.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch helped make sure Lance held a second closed-to-the-media pro day in Fargo, North Dakota, on April 19. Other teams were in attendance, but it reportedly had the feel of a 49ers-run workout.

"I just wanted to give teams an opportunity to see me again," Lance said. "I want teams to know, whether it's Zoom meetings or throwing on the field, I want them to know exactly what they're getting. I just want to be as real as possible.

"... I obviously played one game in 2020, so people didn't get to see me, a large sample size of me, and I understand (the concerns over) only playing 17 games, and things like that. But I wanted to give people another chance to see me throw, and do whatever they wanted to see me do, first and foremost, before Thursday."

What can Lance's new NFL team expect from him?

"A competitor, first and foremost," he answered. "Someone that obviously loves the game of football and wants to have an opportunity to play. I believe in myself. I'm confident in what I can do. But at the same time, I'm going to come in and learn as much as I possibly can. Whatever my role is that first year, Week 1, I'm going to do it to the best of my ability.

"At the end of the day, I'm going to come in, earn respect from as many people as I possibly can. Everyone in the locker room and in the organization, and just handle myself the right way."

Eisen didn't stop at fishing for 49ers-related information. He asked about Lance's interview with Bill Belichick of the New England Patriots.

"I actually did not say that I had a Zoom meeting with Coach Belichick," Lance responded while laughing.

Nice try, Rich. And good job not falling for the fake, Trey.

Get ready for a barrage of speculation surrounding the San Francisco 49ers quarterback situation and its impact on the upcoming 2023 season. Before Sunday, most expected the QB1 job to be Brock Purdy's to lose. However, Monday's news that the rookie quarterback suffered a complete tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in his right elbow changed things. He will require surgery and may not be able to throw for the 49ers until training camp. Jimmy Garoppolo is slated to become a free agent. He suffered a broken foot on December 4 and is still recovering, but he will likely play elsewhere in 2023. So unless the 49ers pursue another veteran—Tom Brady's name may come up once or twice—third-year quarterback Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, may now be the

Brock Purdy is expected to miss about six months due to the tear of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) in the elbow of his throwing arm. The injury was suffered during the first quarter of Sunday's NFC Championship Game against the Philadelphia Eagles. Jimmy Garoppolo, recovering from the broken foot he suffered on December 4, is expected to hit free agency. That leaves the San Francisco 49ers with Trey Lance, the quarterback they drafted with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021. Lance suffered a season-ending ankle injury on September 18, undergoing two surgeries since then, with the

Trey Lance has had his share of critics this season. Many in the media believe the San Francisco 49ers made a mistake giving up so much draft capital to trade up to select the young inexperienced quarterback with the No. 3 overall pick in 2021. Several fans feel the same way. Meanwhile, Brock Purdy, the last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, "Mr. Irrelevant," looked about as NFL-ready as they come in his limited playing time this season, filling in for an injured Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo. What does Lance think about his nonbelievers? The 22-year-old quarterback had a chance to address the skepticism on Tuesday as players cleared their lockers in Santa Clara. "I'm excited to go

John Lynch: Trey Lance has to prove he can stay healthy, 49ers QB injuries not caused by play-calling

The San Francisco 49ers have had six starting quarterbacks since Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach in 2017. Four quarterbacks took snaps this season alone, including the playoffs. The only quarterback to start an entire season is Jimmy Garoppolo, who did so in 2019. Much of the constant quarterback switching has been due to injuries. The 49ers entered the regular season with Trey Lance atop their quarterback depth chart. Jimmy Garoppolo was QB2, and Brock Purdy, a rookie, was QB3. Then Week 2 hit. That's when Lance went down with a season-ending ankle injury. Eleven weeks later, Garoppolo exited a game with what turned out to be a season-ending broken foot, although there was a slim chance he might have been able to suit up had the 49ers
