49ers great Jerry Rice posts message for Justin Fields ahead of second pro day

Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields will work out in front of several NFL teams today, including the San Francisco 49ers. The New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots will also send representatives to the quarterback's second pro day in Columbus, Ohio.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will represent the 49ers.

Because NFL coaches will run it, the throwing session will have more of a feel of a private workout than a pro day and could raise Fields' stock in the eyes of Shanahan and the 49ers, who own the No. 3 overall pick.

Hall of Fame wide receiver and 49ers legend Jerry Rice had some words for the incoming rookie quarterback ahead of his workout (h/t to Dalton Johnson of NBCSBA for the find).

"Justin Fields, hey man, don't worry about what they're saying about you, brother," Rice said via Instagram. "You know that you're a hard worker and you enjoy what you're doing on the football field. You inspire your teammates to be better.

"Hey, they said the same thing about me. They said I couldn't run a 40. Yeah, I might have ran a 4.5, 4.6 — I'm not even sure — but for one thing, they didn't clock me on my way to the end zone. Could nobody catch me. So hey, just let that stuff blow over your head, man.

"Congratulations. I'm sure you're looking forward to the draft, and hopefully, you go high."

While most predict former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to San Francisco at No. 3, that appears to be speculation mostly based on the quarterback type Shanahan has sought in the past. Fields, considered more athletic and having a higher ceiling, could certainly be the pick for the 49ers.

Shanahan and Lynch have already watched Jones in person. They will do so for Fields today and then work out Trey Lance of North Dakota State next week.

The 2021 NFL Draft begins on April 29.

Rapoport: 49ers send clear message to teams inquiring about Brandon Aiyuk

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

Ian Rapoport didn't offer much of an update on the ongoing contract negotiations between the San Francisco 49ers and their standout wide receiver, Brandon Aiyuk. However, the NFL insider emphasized one thing: The team is not entertaining trade discussions at this juncture. Reacting to Aiyuk's decision to unfollow the 49ers on Instagram, Rapoport couldn't help but chuckle at the latest development. This practice has become commonplace among players who are unhappy with their contract situations. Wide receiver Deebo Samuel similarly took this action in 2022 before requesting to be traded just before the draft. Things have yet to escalate that far with Aiyuk, but Rapoport sees his

Bleacher Report's Jordan Schultz reports that the San Francisco 49ers were among several NFL teams in attendance for former Illinois defensive tackle Jer'Zhan Newton's pro day workout. The defender also goes by the name "Johnny." Illinois DT Johnny Newton, a projected 1st-round pick, just wrapped up an impressive Pro Day — showcasing elite explosion and power after a Jones fracture that he's fully healed from.I'm told the following teams were in attendance, among others:BillsCowboys49ersJets… pic.twitter.com/ggMIiIBkub—

Transcripts provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. General Manager John Lynch Opening comments: "This to me, there's nothing like watching our guys compete on Sundays or Thursdays or Mondays. We play a lot of different days now, but nothing like watching our guys compete. But to me, this is really my favorite time of year as an organization because I think it represents our organization coming together and working for a common goal as much as anything we do. When you look at the guys I call our

Brock Purdy hopes to organize throwing session ahead of 49ers training camp

By David Bonilla
Apr 16

The San Francisco 49ers will hold a mandatory minicamp from June 4 through 6, officially concluding the team's offseason program. After that, the Niners will break for over a month and return to the Santa Clara facilities for training camp in late July. Between that time, starting quarterbacks will often organize throwing sessions with their receivers in an effort to build chemistry ahead of the rigors of training camp. 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been unable to participate in such sessions over the last two years. The last overall draft pick in 2022, Purdy had yet to make a name for himself during his first offseason. Last year, he was still recovering from offseason surgery on his throwing arm. RELATED:
