49ers great Jerry Rice posts message for Justin Fields ahead of second pro day

Apr 14, 2021 at 9:18 AM--

Former Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields will work out in front of several NFL teams today, including the San Francisco 49ers. The New York Jets, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, and New England Patriots will also send representatives to the quarterback's second pro day in Columbus, Ohio.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch will represent the 49ers.

Because NFL coaches will run it, the throwing session will have more of a feel of a private workout than a pro day and could raise Fields' stock in the eyes of Shanahan and the 49ers, who own the No. 3 overall pick.

Hall of Fame wide receiver and 49ers legend Jerry Rice had some words for the incoming rookie quarterback ahead of his workout (h/t to Dalton Johnson of NBCSBA for the find).

"Justin Fields, hey man, don't worry about what they're saying about you, brother," Rice said via Instagram. "You know that you're a hard worker and you enjoy what you're doing on the football field. You inspire your teammates to be better.

"Hey, they said the same thing about me. They said I couldn't run a 40. Yeah, I might have ran a 4.5, 4.6 — I'm not even sure — but for one thing, they didn't clock me on my way to the end zone. Could nobody catch me. So hey, just let that stuff blow over your head, man.

"Congratulations. I'm sure you're looking forward to the draft, and hopefully, you go high."

While most predict former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones to San Francisco at No. 3, that appears to be speculation mostly based on the quarterback type Shanahan has sought in the past. Fields, considered more athletic and having a higher ceiling, could certainly be the pick for the 49ers.

Shanahan and Lynch have already watched Jones in person. They will do so for Fields today and then work out Trey Lance of North Dakota State next week.

The 2021 NFL Draft begins on April 29.

Jim Trotter took a look inside the San Francisco 49ers' month-long draft evaluation process that ended this week with the selection of Trey Lance of North Dakota State at No. 3 overall. Since March 26, when the Niners traded a haul of draft capital to the Miami Dolphins to move up, rampant speculation surrounded the team's target. It made for great ratings, I suppose. For a long time, Mac Jones of Alabama was seen as the most likely candidate to be headed to the Bay Area. Not necessarily by fans, but by the many analysts and media members with blue checkmarks by their names on Twitter. That left fans infuriated. Jones was not a popular option. Both Lance and Justin Fields of Ohio State were favored over the Alabama quarterback. In the end, it wasn't

Transcript provided by the San Francisco 49ers Communications staff. Well, just a couple of quick things. One, what was the first impression of the playbook and then, two, what kind of relationship did you gather when you were working with WR Brandon Aiyuk last week? "Yeah, playbook was fun. I've been looking forward to learning a new playbook, and obviously it's an NFL playbook, so it's going to be a lot. But for me, I've been waiting to learn a new playbook for the last, seven eight months. So it was a ton of fun to finally be able to get into it. Me and Brandon got to

Why NDSU coach Matt Entz believes Trey Lance is a great fit for the 49ers

By David Bonilla
May 13, 2021

Matt Entz, the college head coach of Trey Lance, joined KNBR on Wednesday to discuss his former quarterback, who was drafted No. 3 overall two weeks ago by the San Francisco 49ers. The North Dakota State coach is excited to see what his former player can do at the pro level and feels the quarterback landed in the perfect spot. Entz sees 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense as the perfect fit for the 21-year-old rookie. "I'm excited for him. I think it's a great match," Entz told Mark Willard. "Just from my conversations with Coach Shanahan, I think there's some things that he wants to expand on, being able to utilize the quarterback as another option. And in the NFL, you can't afford to get your quarterback injured, but it can be part of the complementary
