49ers signing ex-Cardinals WR Trent Sherfield to a one-year deal

Mar 18, 2021 at 1:27 PM--

The San Francisco 49ers are signing former Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Trent Sherfield to a one-year deal, per Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

"Sherfield excels on special teams but the Niners like his skill set at receiver and he'll have a chance to grab a role there, especially with Kendrick Bourne gone," wrote Garafolo.

Arizona signed Sherfield as an undrafted free agent out of Vanderbilt in 2018. He registered five receptions for 50 yards through 15 games with the Cardinals in 2020 and has caught 28 passes for 340 yards with a touchdown through his three NFL seasons.

Sherfield, 25, was a restricted free agent who the Cardinals opted not to tender. Had he remained in Arizona, he would have likely had to compete for a spot at the bottom of the depth chart. The receiver may be facing a similar situation with San Francisco. Sherfield's contributions as a core special teams player may help, though. He has played 504 snaps on special teams over the past three seasons, with 424 of those coming in the last two years.

According to Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle, Sherfield's deal will pay him $920,000 with $200,000 guaranteed.

Kyle Shanahan was the one who called about Aaron Rodgers as 49ers did their due diligence

By David Bonilla
May 3, 2021

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan joined the Rich Eisen Show on Monday morning and discussed the team's interest in Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers leading to the draft. Really, it was just the team doing its due diligence, but it was a hot rumor that made for some interesting discussion leading to the draft. "The exact truth is I didn't want to wake up the next day, on Friday, and see Aaron Rodgers, one of the best quarterbacks in this league, traded, without doing any due diligence on it," Shanahan explained to Eisen (h/t to Cam Inman of Bay Area News Group). "So I just called Matt and asked him if there was anything to it, and Matt told me I'd be wasting my

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan spoke with reporters on Monday. Lynch revealed that the team plans to exercise the fifth-year option on offensive tackle Mike McGlinchey, keeping him signed through the 2022 season. The move will guarantee the offensive lineman $10.88 million in 2022. San Francisco drafted McGlinchey out of Notre Dame with the No. 9 overall pick in 2018. He earned a 79.7 overall grade and a 91.3 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus in 2020, both of which were career-highs. However, the offensive lineman's 58.3 pass-blocking grade was a career-low. "I think there's a lot of things I did really well all year,"
