After some confusion on the NFL's part, while awarding compensatory picks on Wednesday, the San Francisco 49ers ended up with two additional selections, increasing the team's total number of draft picks to 10, but then lost their own seventh-rounder on March 16.

Below is an updated list of San Francisco's selections in the 2021 NFL Draft, followed by a breakdown of how the team got to nine total picks.

  • Round 1, Pick 12
  • Round 2, Pick 11, 43 overall
  • Round 3, Pick 39, 102 overall (compensatory pick)
  • Round 4, Pick 12, 117 overall
  • Round 5, Pick 11, 155 overall
  • Round 5, Pick 28, 172 overall (from NO)
  • Round 5, Pick 36, 180 overall (compensatory pick)
  • Round 6, Pick 10, 194 overall
  • Round 7, Pick 2, 230 overall (from NYJ)

Own third-round pick is missing
The 49ers lack their own third-round pick, which was part of last year's trade for offensive tackle Trent Williams.

Third-round compensatory pick
This is the first of two compensatory picks awarded to the 49ers. It was received as part of the NFL's minority-hiring program after the New York Jets hired former 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh as their head coach.

The NFL initially mistakenly awarded a second third-round compensatory pick to San Francisco for the Washington Football Team's hiring of former 49ers executive Martin Mayhew as general manager. Instead, San Francisco will receive two more compensatory picks—one more for Saleh in 2022 and one for Mayhew in 2023—over the next two years.

Extra fifth-round pick
San Francisco received a fifth-round pick from the New Orleans Saints as part of linebacker Kwon Alexander's trade.

Fifth-round compensatory pick
The fifth-round compensatory pick was awarded for the loss of wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders last year.

Extra seventh-round pick
San Francisco received a seventh-round pick from the New York Jets as part of the trade for defensive end Jordan Willis.

Own seventh-round pick is missing
The 49ers lost their own seventh-round pick (No. 237 overall) when Marquise Goodwin reverted back to the team from the Philadelphia Eagles following last year's trade of the wide receiver. San Francisco and Philadelphia initially swapped 2020 sixth-round picks in the deal. Goodwin opted out of last season due to COVID-19 and did not play a snap with the Eagles, resulting in the receiver reverting to the 49ers due to the contract terms.

Note: Article updated on March 16, 2021, to reflect the loss of the seventh-round pick, and then again on March 19, 2021, once the NFL officially announced the order of all seven rounds.
