49ers among teams to meet with Northwestern CB Greg Newsome II

Feb 26, 2021 at 12:23 PM--

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the San Francisco 49ers are among several teams that have met virtually with former Northwestern CB Greg Newsome II. The other teams include the Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and others.

"One of the best CB's in this draft," notes Melo. "A first-round talent."

Newsome was rarely targeted by opposing quarterbacks this past season. According to Northwestern's athletics site, he registered 12 tackles, nine pass breakups, and hauled in his lone career interception through six games in 2020. The campaign earned Newsome first-team All Big Ten honors.

Injuries may be among Newsome's red flags. He dealt with an ankle injury in 2018, an undisclosed injury in 2019, and a groin injury in 2020.

NFL teams are allowed to conduct up to five video calls per prospect leading to the draft, and each call can last up to one hour. There is no limit to how many phone conversations NFL teams can conduct with draft-eligible players.

San Francisco has several cornerbacks scheduled to become free agents next month, including Richard Sherman, Jason Verrett, and K'Waun Williams.

The NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 29.

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network are reporting that Justin Fields of Ohio State is managing epilepsy, a neurological disorder that can cause seizures. While the report may be news to fans, the NFL insiders state that the quarterback had already informed teams of the condition during the pre-draft process, so it probably isn't a surprise in NFL circles. "It has not affected football [and] doctors believe he'll outgrow it, as his other family members have," wrote Rapoport. OSU QB Justin Fields has confirmed to NFL teams during the pre-draft process that he is managing epilepsy – a

When Jimmy Garappolo arrived in San Francisco in a trade from the New England Patriots in 2017, he was a young, athletic, and skilled quarterback. However, a couple of season-ending injuries later, his value has plummeted. The perception of the quarterback is that of an older, immobile, and inaccurate passer who often makes questionable decisions. Garoppolo's injury-riddled stint with the Niners has caused the entire team to suffer due to below-average backup play leading to mostly disappointing results. After head coach Kyle Shanahan's third losing season in four years, he has set his mind on using the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft to select a durable franchise quarterback who can execute his offensive playbook effectively and has the athletic skill set to lead a
