49ers among teams to meet with Northwestern CB Greg Newsome II

Feb 26, 2021 at 12:23 PM--

According to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, the San Francisco 49ers are among several teams that have met virtually with former Northwestern CB Greg Newsome II. The other teams include the Tennessee Titans, Green Bay Packers, Kansas City Chiefs, and others.

"One of the best CB's in this draft," notes Melo. "A first-round talent."

Newsome was rarely targeted by opposing quarterbacks this past season. According to Northwestern's athletics site, he registered 12 tackles, nine pass breakups, and hauled in his lone career interception through six games in 2020. The campaign earned Newsome first-team All Big Ten honors.

Injuries may be among Newsome's red flags. He dealt with an ankle injury in 2018, an undisclosed injury in 2019, and a groin injury in 2020.

NFL teams are allowed to conduct up to five video calls per prospect leading to the draft, and each call can last up to one hour. There is no limit to how many phone conversations NFL teams can conduct with draft-eligible players.

San Francisco has several cornerbacks scheduled to become free agents next month, including Richard Sherman, Jason Verrett, and K'Waun Williams.

The NFL Draft is scheduled to begin on April 29.

Justin Fields to throw again for NFL teams on April 14; 49ers expected to attend

Much was said of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch's absences from Ohio State's pro day last week. Instead of traveling to Columbus to watch quarterback Justin Fields, a candidate to be drafted with the team's No. 3 overall pick, the duo was in Tuscaloosa for Alabama's pro day, watching Mac Jones. Why Jones over Fields? "[Just] talking with Fields' agent [David Mulugheta] and everything, we'll get another one from him too," Shanahan explained last week, per Kirk Larrabee. "So we'll be able to see him. That kind of made it an easy decision." According to Fields' agent, that next opportunity will come on

There was no media coverage of Justin Fields' second pro day in Columbus, Ohio. However, the Ohio State football program posted the following video on Instagram (shared by Jake Hutchinson of KNBR) featuring several throws by the former Buckeye quarterback from today's workout. As was the case for last week's second pro day for Justin Fields of Ohio State, there was no media coverage for Trey Lance's second workout in Fargo, North Dakota. A handful of teams, made up of the San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Denver Broncos, were on hand to watch the former North Dakota State Bison throw passes. While neither fans nor the media could view the throwing session, North Dakota State football's official Twitter account provided a glimpse of the workout. Jeremiah on 49ers' pick in latest mock draft: 'I am surprised that everything you hear points toward Jones'

By David Bonilla

With so many smokescreens and teams keeping their strategies close to the vest, it's tough to believe anything you hear when it comes to pre-draft rumors and speculation. Everyone in the media feels the San Francisco 49ers traded up to the No. 3 spot for Alabama quarterback Mac Jones, whether they can make sense of it or not. Much of that is based on what they hear from around the league. Their colleagues and other teams feel Jones might be the pick, despite the overwhelming opinion that the selection would be a reach. NFL Media analyst Bucky Brooks doesn't even view Jones as worthy of a first-round pick, much less No. 3 overall. "Perhaps the Alabama quarterback is a secret member of The Avengers, operating like Tony Stark as Iron Man,"
